“This almost entirely instrumental album sounds exactly as you’d expect alate Pink Floyd album to sound: awash with David Gilmour’s trademark guitar sounds, themes and rhythms ebbing and flowing into each other. Pleasing on the ear; close but no (have a) cigar. . The Endless River is a perfect summation of the listening experience, and appears to be a recurring theme, since it was a phrase he sung about on High Hopes, the last song on the last Pink Floyd studio album, The Division Bell, 20 years earlier. Largely constructed from outtakes from the sessions of that previous album, it is also very much a lament to the late Richard Wright who died in 2008. Over tapes of his keyboard playing, Gilmour has draped his multi-layered guitar licks and Nick Mason has laid down his distinctive drums, not least on Skins – reintroducing the mid-70s prog/rock band fashion to have at least one drum solo track (see also: Genesis, Cream, Led Zeppelin). . This is a double album and presented as their last under the Pink Floyd name. In terms of it being a coherent and contemporaneous piece of music, it’s overblown and self-indulgent and way, way too long. In terms of it being the swansong of a classic and much-loved band and a loving tribute to a lost band-member then it’s rather beautiful and fans will welcome with open arms. . Taking the musical style and structure of Shine On You Crazy Diamond as its starting point, each side presents a thematic set of pieces that tend to wash over you, almost ambient in their soporific nature. There is only one song with lyrics, appropriately set as the last track, Louder Than Words, written by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s wife and a novelist. Describing the nature of the band’s relationship, it’s a moving and suitable elegy to a brilliant but fractious band who, like Icarus, set their controls for the heart of the sun and at times got their wings burnt...” . Polish black metalliers Behemoth are not a band I would normally listen to but OMG a photographers dream to shoot in a live arena. In the live photo review on Louder Than War, this is what I had to say about the experience.
