The last Pink Floyd album in the #discoveryboxset, and the last Pink Floyd album to feature more than two of its original members. In my opinion it’s more of a real Pink Floyd album than #learningtofly in that Richard Wright and David Gilmour contribute most of the songwriting on at least the musical end of it. Three songs by Wright and Gilmour, one song just by Richard Wright, five songs by David Gilmour, one song by Gilmour and their producer Bob Ezrin. That’s on the end of the musical composition. David Gilmour shares credit for writing lyrics with his spouse Polly Sampson, with Nick Laird-Clowes, or with both on all songs except instrumentals of course. Richard Wright’s musical composition had lyrics provided by Anthony Moore. This #1994 #album was the real end of the band as a functioning unit: #theendlessriver, released 20 years later in #2014, was put together by Nick Mason and David Gilmour after Richard Wright had passed away, using music he had left behind. It’s not bad music but it’s not particularly interesting and not at the creative level we’ve come to expect from any members of Pink Floyd. It’s not even particularly interesting as ambient music. The discovery box itself is a great collection of Pink Floyd studio albums from their first to this one. This is the last real Pink Floyd album. Richard Wright was not on the next one, and Roger Waters was not on the last three. They went out with an ambitious bang, summarizing their political and social critique with a #rockopera that became a #movie and that also became one of the biggest selling albums of the 1970s. #thefinalcut, which follows, completes the commentary musically and lyrically. Since Roger Waters had already been doing most of the songwriting, it at least fits Pink Floyd‘s discography. Their last three albums have about one albumish worth of good material and sounds related to Pink Floyd musically, but not really like it. Their last album, #theendlessriver, was a noble gesture to honor recently deceased Richard Wright, and probably should’ve just been called a Wright solo album. #pinkfloyd’s final #album #theendlessriver #2014 composed using #richardwright material left after his death by #davidgilmour and #nickmason with others, adding some new tracks by Gilmour. It’s #ambient #instrumental music intended to preserve Wright’s legacy, but it doesn’t contribute much to the band’s catalog musically.
