Miss You mv: Easter eggs

Miss You, like Louis’ previous music video for Just Like You, and like the bts video clips for Back to You, has multiple Easter eggs in the background. I’ve read some discussion about the neon inverted pink triangles and interlocking blue and green rings in the final shot, and debate about whether these symbols were intentional. I think the cross-cutting and editing of the video leaves no doubt that they were intentional, and that they inform a subtext of meaning. Again, these are my opinions, are in no way definitive. 

First, the opening shot, quiet and reflective. 0:02:

0:10, close-up on Louis’ face, showing that the song is from his POV.

Snippets of memories flash up, indelible visuals flashing by in microseconds. One of them is an image of the interlocking blue and green rings, and the blurred pink triangle in the background 0:14. This is a major theme, and a recurring image. Remember the shapes, and also the colors: blue, green, pink. 

Pink and blue belong to the bisexual pride flag. There is only a hint of the pride theme here, but with the suggestion of a triangular shape to the pink color, I believe that the underlying LGBQT theme is intentional.

He meets his friends at 0:23, “is it my imagination?”

This song is about Louis’ yearning for someone in the midst of partying with his friends. Who is this person? Could he be signing “H” here (0:56)?

Are we reading too much into it? Maybe it’s our imagination. Right? Louis lets us know that these things are meant to be noted, (1:09) “You saw.” (Addendum: I have been corrected. Apparently the words were already on the premises, and say, “TELL HER YOU SAW ME.” They refer to an instrumental composition by Pat Metheny. 

Despite being surrounded by good friends, he is lonely (1:17). Alone on top of a table, with graffiti declaring, “ME.” This is as good a visual depiction of Louis’ current career dilemma as any heartbreaking photo:

Something interesting happens at the bridge. At 2:13, “asking my friends,” he is in a pink room. The color ties into the inverted pink flag, the bi-pride flag, and of course, into someone’s famous pink album.

For real, though? Isn’t pink just a popular club color? It’s got nothing to do with pride, right? Here we go, 2:23:

What was that, Louis?

An inverted pink triangle inside a blue triangle. Clear imagery that is different from the opening and closing inverted, pink triangles, and therefore meant to evoke a theme. Transitioning to the blue/green background, “we’re strangers,” 2:27, with a band of pink in the background. Colors here: pink, purple, blue (banded like a flag?):

“When I feel it coming on, I just throw it all away,” 2:28, pink and blue palm tree, blending to the purple brick wall. 

“It doesn’t matter anyway”; the lyrics show how he is pushing his thoughts away, What are these thoughts, exactly? At 2:34, these thoughts are represented by the blue and green interlocking rings:

“I’m dancing on tables, and I’m off my face.” 2:36: neon pink lips. Remind us of anyone? Again, pink lips juxtaposed against his blue face.

“And all of my people,” 2:43-2:44, a flash from blue to pink walls:

“Singing ‘till last call,” 2:47:

What do the interlocking blue and green rings mean? An image follows, lasting a millisecond – a neon red heart (”when the lights go on”):

Maybe it’s for his lady? In case of any doubt, the images that follow explicitly link the interlocking circles to the upside down pink triangle, at 2:54:

Again at 2:59, “and I’m off my face,” pink and blue:

3:09, another pair of neon lips, another contrast of pink and blue, “and it’s all out of tune”:

“Shit, maybe I miss you.” These have already been pointed out by others. The presence of such strong imagery of the interlocking green and blue rings and the pink triangle, in close proximity to Louis’ face, and included in the concluding shots, rules out any ambiguity. They are meant to be there and meant to be seen, and their meaning is clear.

Addendum: watching the video again (20 January 2018), I notice an additional implication of the bright flashing lights: the idea that one is blinded by lights in the darkness, and that coherence only comes when light shines everywhere.

It’s an interesting contrast to all of Louis’ Instagram selfies captioned “Sunrise.”
