       “  you’re  right.  i  did.  ”  if  the  admission  bothers  keegan  at  all,  his  face  doesn’t  show  it,  impassive  and  neutral.  “  i  thought  the  rewards  worth  the  risk.  there  is  no  success  without  risk.  does  that  bother  you  ?  ”

      “  there  is  nothing  to  fear,  caro.  we  won’t  permit  him  to  testify  --  not  that  he  would  dare,  anyhow.  ”  not  that  it  really  matters  --  even  if  sergei  was  the  most  wanted  man  alive,  keegan  wouldn’t  allow  him  to  be  arrested.  such  a  thing  --  no,  it  simply  was  not  allowed,  and  that  was  keegan’s  final  opinion  on  the  matter.  still,  it  would  be  simpler  for  everyone  if  romolo  were  to  ‘  disappear  ’  ,  or  die  while  in  custody. 

      of  course,  since  romolo  had  been  a  proper  loyal  henchman,  keegan  was  far  more  inclined  towards  a  mysterious  disappearance  one  day  and  a  ‘  new  ’  henchman  in  the  ranks  the  next  day.  he  did  like  to  reward  good  behavior,  after  all. 

      much  better  for  morale  than  fear.

      although  he  did  feel  a  bit  bad  that  it  took  getting  arrested  for  him  to  finally  remember  romolo’s  name.

      “  i’ve  always  wanted  to  do  a  prison  break,  after  all.  what  do  you  say,  sergei  ?  want  to  let  some  trouble  loose  ?  ”

      “  why  would  i  ever  want  to  leave  ?  ”  keegan  steps  forward,  slowly,  carefully  --  sergei  could  turn  and  flee,  if  he  wished  --  keegan  presses  on,  stepping  forward  until  he  can  lean  up  to  breath  out  the  next  words  against  sergei’s  skin.  “  to  do  such  a  thing  --  ”  his  hands,  calloused  from  years  of  handiwork,  reach  up  to  cradle  sergei’s  face  as  though  the  blond  is  made  of  something  precious,  something  fragile. 

      “  to  leave  --  it  would  be  akin  finding  the  rarest  of  treasures  and  just  walking  away,  my  darling.  ”  keegan  smiles,  rising  up  on  the  balls  of  his  feet  to  press  a  kiss  to  the  scar  that  marks  sergei’s  mouth.  “  to  leave  would  be  to  make  the  greatest  mistake  of  my  life.  ”

      “  if  not  me,  then  who  ?  ”  keegan  smiles,  brushes  the  lightest  of  touches  over  sergei’s  knuckles.  the  smile  doesn’t  meet  his  eye.  he  glances  back  behind  them  to  the  countdown  on  the  screen  before  he  returns  his  gaze  back  to  sergei’s.  “  there  isn’t  anyone  else  who  could  fix  this. ”

      in  truth,  keegan’s  not  entirely  sure  he  can  stop  this  --  but  it  doesn’t  matter.  this  is  a  lot  bigger  than  just  saving  a  base.  there’s  a  lot  more  repercussions  than  just  a  lost  base  if  this  detonates.  he  had  been  playing  with  fire  when  he  picked  fights  with  the  wrong  people,  and  if  there  was  a  price  to  pay  for  that  --  well,  it  was  his  to  pay.  he  made  the  choices,  and  he  bore  the  consequences.  that  was  the  price  of  being  a  leader. 

      “  someone  has  to  lead  the  henchmen,  darling.  don’t  worry  about  me.  i’m  sure  this  won’t  take  long.  ”  well,  that  was  mostly  because  they  didn’t  have  long  --  but  it  didn’t  matter,  as  long  as  keegan  did  his  duty  to  his  men,  and  as  long  as  sergei  was  safe.  there  was  no  need  for  anyone  else  to  be  caught  in  the crossfire.  keegan  didn’t  have  a  death  wish  --  he  was,  in  fact,  quite  selfish  and  valued  his  life  more  than  most  anything  else,  but  this  was  greater  than  him. 

      to  change  the  world.  that’s  all  he  ever  wanted. 

      well,  regardless  of  what  happened  here,  he  would  tonight.

      “  this  isn’t  a  dictatorship,  sergei.  ”  well,  that  wasn’t  entirely  true,  was  it  ?  keegan  did  expect  his  henchmen  to  do  what  they  were  told  without  questioning,  unless  he  asked  otherwise  --  but  sergei  was  not  like  them.  sergei’s  talents  would  be  wasted  on  blind  obedience.  more  than  that,  keegan  just  .  .  .  wanted  more  for  sergei.  sergei  deserves  more.  “  not  for  you.  ”

      and  to  think  such  was  not  keegan’s  usual  thought  process  --  keegan  knew  he  could  be  quite  demanding,  rather  selfish.  he  cared  for  very  few  people.  sergei  was  not  supposed  to  be  one  of  them. 

      but  he  was,  now.  there  was  no  stopping  what  was  already  started. 

      “  it  will  always  be  your  choice.  ”

      “  that  would  probably  be  for  the  best,  wouldn’t  it,  my  darling  right  hand  ?  ”  keegan  laughs,  warm  and  bright  and  loud  over  the  blaring  alarms  as  he  tucks  the  oversized,  shining  ruby  in  his  pocket.  now  they’ve  got  the  funds  for  lair  decorations  right  in  their  pockets.  

      he  reaches  back,  grabbing  sergei’s  hand  and  tugging  as  he  starts  running.  “  you  did  leave  our  calling  card,  right  ?  ”

      after  all,  supervillains  were  only  super  when  they  had  the  flare  and  publicity  to  match.
