For the last few months I’ve been working on a music video for a folk musician called SONiA @disappearfear , and I am happy to be able to share it now. It’s a trailer for SONiA’s new retrospective album, #LoveOutLoud , celebrating 30 years of her career.  From our conversations and listening to her musics, I learnt that SONiA was the first openly gay folk pop musician, in both her music and her lifestyle, (as opposed to artists who came out later on in their careers).  She has been a great advocate for LGBT+ rights and fair treatment of marginalised people. SONiA’s lyrics and songs are quite illustrative and are often drawn from her life experiences of being Jewish and owning and embracing her identity of being gay despite living in a society that doesn’t always approve. This will probably make me as popular as the IMPLIED KISSING guy. (I’ll just preface it by saying NO DISRESPECT is intended.) I’m having a hell of a time understanding why, on one hand, everyone is a champion of loving the wine, not the label, yet-on the other, it seems that more and more labels are being added by the community that-I thought-was adamant about getting rid of them. The fact that David and Patrick are allowed to live and love as they choose without having to be judged or put in the center like show ponies.....seems like it goes hand in hand with having no labels. A while back I read some rather angry comments regarding straight people saying that Schitt’s Creek wasn’t just for the LGBTQ’s. I don’t know the intention behind that statement, but I do think it would be rather short sided to dismiss the all to real possibility this show was sent ripples in every possible direction. The relationship between Patrick and David has succeeded, at least in my eyes, in blurring gender. When I watch them, I don’t see two men deeply in love and taking care of each other. I don’t see two guys having an absolutely intoxicating sex life. It’s not two men I see holding hands and looking into each other’s eye as though a lifetime together would still not be long enough. What I see is an enviable relationship. One that I’d give anything to be in. And, who wouldn’t? Dan Levy spoke about his vision of a world that loved out loud. That sentiment paired with his wine analogy would say it all, I think. Loving without labels really is loving out loud. Just my two cents.
