I saw a post on bluesky asking what made Luca Blight such a great villain, and I didn't answer it there because I got the vibe they were trying to farm out their media literacy in order to create content, but it was a question I wanted to answer:
A big plot point in Suikoden I is that most of the imperial generals are under the influence of evil magic and that's what causing them to wage a war of extermination on their neighbors. Out from under the mind control magic, most of them will join your cause. Luca is so sadistic and over the top evil that you might think something similar is happening with him. But no, this is just him, this is a wholly human evil, he is just actually this awful.
Taken by himself, Luca is just a guy who sucks. He is a ONE dimensional character. He's a sadist. He likes killing and tormenting people for fun. He arguably has a traumatic backstory, but that does little to make him empathetic, because his reaction to that trauma was to decide that there were two types of people: victims and bullies. So by God he was going to be a bully.
But we don't take Luca by himself, because he's the crown prince, and as a bonus he is also a very big and strong guy who not only enjoys killing, he's very good at it.
So what makes Luca interesting isn't Luca, it's other characters' reactions to him. His father and his sister are unwilling or unable to reign him in. Some of his generals try to mitigate the damage he causes and some of them enable him in order to advance their own agenda. He's a potentially valuable weapon--if you can avoid cutting yourself with it.
Notably, Luca is the main antagonist of Suikoden II and [major spoilers for a 25 year old game but learning this is a big part of what made me interested in Suikoden II to begin with]
