I’ve written about Luisa Omielan before on my blog. I have seen her show “What Would Beyoncé Do?” show several times and while up at EdFringe this year I caught her incredibly self-assured show ‘Am I Right Ladies’ which was at The Counting House and follows her show ‘What Would Beyoncé Do’.
She is such an inspirational woman. Her confidence and energy is relentless.
Luisa has an absolute knack at saying what the rest of us are thinking but daren’t say, or if we do, it wouldn’t be aloud or indeed on stage in front of a full audience night after night.
Luisa Omielen isn’t afraid to bare all, and I feel there must be a fair few who could relate to what she was taking about both female and male.
The first time I saw her show, I was on the train on the way home and suddenly found myself in tears..I wondered why this was. Was it because I hadn’t enjoyed the show? Had she touched on an upsetting topic? (well yes, but it wasn’t actually either of these that had had me in tears.) No, it was simply that I could relate a lot with what she was talking about and voicing so unbelievably well to others. It really had struck a chord in me – and that was a good thing. Her show “What Would Beyoncé Do?” is not at all surprising that it has had to have added dates in theatres, it has gone international and it’s sold out again and again and again. Really, this is the sort of show that absolutely everyone: male or female, should see this show. In fact, I will go as far as to say – I really hope that Luisa is putting it on DVD because if she is – everyone should buy it!
I was really lucky for her to agree to meet with me for a chat about comedy whilst I was up in Edinburgh for the Fringe. What we both realised early on was it was a bit of a premature conversation. She had absolutely incredible advice for me, along the lines of: you’re clearly really passionate about gigging and comedy. But, you’re putting far too much pressure on yourself. Don’t worry about being funny and making people laugh, concentrate on enjoying your time on stage. Go and get yourself more gigs and just do lots of it, the rest will come. Come back and have a conversation with me when you’ve done, say 100 gigs. I was ridiculously appreciative of her spending time with me to chat.
I don’t know whether Luisa realises this, but she is an inspiration to me..and I really appreciated her kind, encouraging words of wisdom. She is, I guess, a bit like a mentor to me in this comedy world/industry/circuit.
I highly recommend her show Am I Right Ladies.
It’s a sad fact, but when people think of their favourite comedians..it’s not often they name female comedians..
However, Luisa Omielan is living proof that women CAN be funny.
I’m really looking forward to seeing her gig again in the not so distant future..
