I met the famous Sacabambaspis model at the Natural History Museum of Helsinki!

Here he is with all his friends! The Sacabambaspis text reads, “The first jawless fish first evolved in the Ordovician period. This is a reconstruction of the late-Ordovician Sacabambaspis javieri fish, whose fossils have been found in Bolivia.”

The Natural History Museum of Helsinki has one big wall that shows a sliver of the marine life diversity found in the world’s oceans right in the beginning of the world environments exhibit.

Featuring in the closer photos a preserved sturgeon, a lamprey, two sharks, a sea robin, and a moray eel!

There’s also sharks and whales and other marine life on the ceiling but I forgot to take pictures besides for this wolf eel whoops.

This diorama of a polar bear attempting to capture a seal fascinated me lots as a kid, due to its tense nature. It’s right near the entrance of the world wildlife exhibit, so you really can’t miss this energy-filled scene waiting for you down the hall: a still image of a chase of life and death. The taxidermy models are obviously not alive, but that never stopped me from wondering if the seal could really get away from the massive claws and teeth of the bear.

Something I only noticed on my last visit is that the “ice” has air bubbles under it, which makes it feel a tad more real despite the lack of visible water!

In 2022, a female walrus nicknamed Stena accidentally got lost in the Baltic Sea and ended up landing in Hamina, Finland. She was in bad shape and starving and sadly passed away as she was being transported to the Korkeasaari Zoo for treatment. Stena’s hide was saved from her autopsy and was made into a taxidermy model, which you can find in the Natural History Museum of Helsinki, too!

Tänään käytiin ton ukkelin kans Luonnotieteellisessä museossa ja kaupoilla metsästämässä hyödyllisiä asioita. Käytiin kierroksen jälkeen syömässä ja näin kellon seinällä ja tajusin että oltiin kävelty 6h putkeen. Huomenna voi olla et jalat vihaa mua.
