her relationships with will and hannibal illustrate this. she is drawn to them not because she desires passion, but because they need fixing. her attraction is to vulnerability itself — to the idea that she can heal and contain it. she seeks to be the opposite of chaos, not out of love, but out of the need to conquer darkness and prove that her light is stronger. this is the essence of luxuria as excessive delight: she derives spiritual pleasure from remaining “virtuous” even among the fallen.

in religious logic, this is a sin, because behind such false virtue lies pride — the belief that a human being can be the source of salvation. in that sense, alana mirrors hannibal: he delights in the aesthetics of control, while she delights in its ethics. he dominates through destruction; she, through healing. both share a desire for mastery and self-deification — only expressed through different domains.

her “lust” is directed toward the abstract — toward the very idea of perfection, toward the role of the “righteous woman” in a world of broken men. it is a form of narcissism disguised as empathy. she longs to embody goodness itself, but that longing turns her compassion into a tool of power.

thus, alana bloom should not be seen as a symbol of carnal lust, but as an allegory of spiritual lust — the state in which one takes pleasure in their own image of righteousness and loses humility. this makes her not a secondary character, but a counterpoint to hannibal — two expressions of the same idea. both serve not people, but their inner ideals — aesthetic for him, ethical for her — and both derive satisfaction from inhabiting their chosen roles.

that’s why i always say it’s essential to go beyond a superficial reading of the character and look deeper, to understand how layered her portrayal becomes as the story unfolds. she is not a foolish woman “jumping from bed to bed,” as many viewers think. she is a calculating woman who knows she can bring “good,” yet understands she can only achieve it through control — the very thing she craves most.
