Eclipses have long held celestial/mythical importance and awing power in mythos and cultures across the world.

They are an event that literally have their own mythology - reasons for why they happen throughout ancient civilizations and the stories are wondrous and awesome.

Kamblitas was king of Lydia. It’s said about him that he was so greedy that, in his enthusiasm, he ate up his own wife. Of course, he reckoned he’d been impaired by drugs, so when people started to gossip about the deed, he took up his sword, stood in the middle of a full marketplace, and said: ‘Zeus, if I did what I did of my own accord, may I pay the price myself; but if I was impaired by drugs, may those who drugged me be punished instead.’ He said this and, as everyone watched, he slit his own throat.

True. And this isn't the only example of this or the belief - eclipses have long been associated with godly intervention, events, even doorways to another world, which looking at this, it's not hard to imagine why.

The Eastern origin of Chess is undisputed, but when and by whom it was introduced into Europe is unknown. According to Herodius, the Lydians suffered from a long and severe famine in the reign of Atys, and in order to forget their misery, invented many games, particularly dice. Previous writers attribute the invention of games of chance to the Greeks during the siege of Troy, and Cicero mentions games in the camp; but it does not follow that these games were either chess, cards, or dice. They may have been knuckle-bones or jack-stones, as that game was known in very early days, and pictures representing persons playing with them have been found among Egyptian antiquities.

Can't wait for by solar eclipse on Monday! I've never seen one before, have you? A little bit about Thales, who may have been the first guy to correctly predict when an eclipse of the sun would happen. Thales was born in what's now Turkey, in the city of Miletus, about 630 BC, during the Archaic period. At that time, Miletus was a city where people spoke Greek, though it may have paid taxes or tribute to the Lydians. Thales (THAY-lees) travelled all over when he was a young man, and he may have studied with Egyptian or Babylonian scientists. Miletus was a very rich city at this time, and had trading colonies in Egypt that would have made this easier. Thales understood that the earth was round, and that the moon was lit by light reflecting from the sun.
