Exploring the links of symbolism between Lila Velann and the constellation Lyra give way to more in-depth signification than one might think at first sight.

Lila Velann is one of the main members of the bridge crew, and as communication officer, it could be argued that her job on the Eridani is among the most important ones. As such, we can draw a parallel between the main and brightest star of Lyra, Vega. Vega is the fifth brightest star in Earth's sky, and it's apparent magnitude as been used as a standard for the B-V index of stars, helping determine the colours of stars with precision. As communication officer and as a Betazoid, Lila is often placed in the position of both messenger and interpreter, helping figure out the meaning of people's words through translation, as well as through her empathic and telepathic abilities, figuring out their "true colours".

Additionally, her extraordinary abilities of empathy and telepathy, Lila is very much noticed by her peers, especially among other telepaths and empaths, which can liken her to a bright and visible star such as Vega,

To continue, the constellation Lyra represents, as you might have guessed, a lyre. This alone can also be linked back to Lila Velann. Lyres are musical instrument, and through them, a great deal can be communicated. Emotions, meaning, poetry and powerful messages can be rendered transmissible through songs. As an officer tasked with communication, this attribute fits Lila quite well. It also aligns with her previous ambition as a young girl, to become an ambassador and diplomate, where communication and exchanges of information, while vastly different, could still be represented by the lyre.

To add to this, the ancient Greeks saw in Lyra most exactly a kithara. To Star Trek fans, it might ring a bell, as it sounds a lot like how the Vulcan Lyre is called in Vulkhansu, ka'athyra. Now, what does the Vulcan lyre has to do with Lila Velann? Why of course her emotional connection with Sopek of Vulcan.

On a more mythological standpoint, it was believed by the ancient Greeks that Lyra was the lyre of Orpheus, placed among the stars after his death. Orpheus and Eurydice's story is a well-known myth about love enduring through death, and while the two lovers do not get to be reunited out of the Underworld due to Orpheus returning, he did so out of love and devotion to Eurydice. His entire trek to the Underworld was for these reasons. This characteristic of enduring loyalty and devotion, and this emphasis on the importance of caring for another and love can be symbolic of Lila's character itself. She can be assertive, and has the grit necessary to be in Starfleet, but she is also a kind, caring person, who values love highly in her life, and would no doubt risk a great deal for it.
