Mickey was given the chance to help souls along or to guide them back to their homes. Even hold onto them through the right means.

Alex as a doll is a Soul crutch. His soul is caged into this form and he is essentially the doll until Julius can find a way out of the facility without letting their captors know he isn't Alex.

Julius ended up in Alex's body during an experiment Mace Corp. ran on Alex.

Essentially Alex was forced out of his body to see if they could replace his soul with someone else. Julius however convinced them it didn't work by pretending to be Alex and because Alex was being difficult before he was soul swapped they thought it was still him.

Julius was given the chance to do something to see if he suddenly had the science answers to make their machine work and he instead made a doll to pull Alex into. He didn't pull him back however, until they were alone.
