|Theotomy| Couple weeks ago I was visiting a special place in Henan province #龙门石窟which has enormous amount of gorgeous Buddha sculptures engraved in caves. I made some photographs on the film even though it was quite emotional shooting images of them. “God is dead” has been a modern man’s mantra for last century. He blasted temples off, shot #Buddhas, burnt priests to convince himself. He searched for reason, appealed for common sense, and applied logic. He endeavored to dissect his soul and scrap away the faith - his faith. He never succeed, though. However, this theotomy became a severe trauma of humankind in the 20th century. The unbearable pain of that experience compels a man to neglect it; like phantom limb pain, it is still chasing him when the weather changes. In 20th century, religious artifacts frequently became victims of fanatic vandalism. In China, the most common victims of theotomy are Buddhas hidden in caves and grottos of sacred mountains; many of them are decapitated or riddled with bullets. Today our performance with @merekina and @vasily.onl in #m50shanghai will recreate the image of those Buddha sculptures, a visual and light image is supported by declaiming a lecture of Anatoly Lunacharsky, a Russian revolutionary and the first Soviet People’s Commissar of Education. #seethebuddhakillthebuddha #performance (at Shanghai Art District M50)
