As I walk through the hallways of San Beda, I realized that we can see conic sections everywhere, these are even noticable inside the campus. For today’s blog, I’ve decided to inform everyone about what our Pre-Calculus teacher taught us.
• c i r c l e -A circle is the intersection of a plane perpendicular to the cone’s axis. Masking tapes or any other kind of tapes are shaped like circles for us to use it easily. The hole in the middle are usually for it to hold in place using a tape dispenser or to put it in your arm. They are rolled up in a circle to consume less space and it is not necessary to be shaped like a circle because you can use a tape in any shape it is formed.
• e l l i p s e -An ellipse is the locus of a point which moves in a plane such that the sum of its distances from the two points called foci add up to a constant. My example for ellipse is the logo of the Toyota brand. The outer part of the logo symbolizes a steering wheel, the designer of the said logo is the one responsible for the shape. It is necessary to be shaped like an oval to make the letter “T” stand out in the middle
• p a r a b o l a -A parabola is a set of all points equidistant from a line and a fixed point not on the line. An arch is a curved structure and commonly known for pathways or monuments. An arch is shaped like a parabola because it is more strong and sturdy if it is shaped like a curve. It makes it an arch because of its arched shaped structure, that’s why it is necessary to be shaped like that.
• h y p e r b o l a -Hyperbolas are types of smooth curve lying in a plane, defined by its geometric properties. My example for a hyperbola is a lamp, When placing a lamp close to a wall, the light of the lamp gives off a shadow that happens to form a hyperbola. But in this picture, my exampleof a hyperbola is the handle. It is necessary to be shaped like that for us to carry it around easily so it doesn’t slip in our hands.
