It does not seem right to start the story out any other way than this: Eric Andersen did not want to go to Swynlake.
But what Eric Andersen wanted did not matter. It didn’t matter that there was a boat with a spot waiting for him in the docks of Newhaven, it didn’t matter that he was old enough to say no, and it did not matter that he did not want to go because he had to. Given to him in the form of a request, filled to the brim with the connotations that this is what his father would have wanted for him, Eric was being sent on a solo Hunt.
He was enrolled into the local University, moved into the dorms, and-
(”Hold it!”
The man sitting in the chair beside the bed closed his mouth, looking to younger of the two children laying among the mountain of blankets and pillows. A gathering place of two kingdoms whose subjects were stuffed animals and where imagination was more powerful than the threat of war.
“I thought you promised this story wasn’t going to be boring.”
The man sighed. Everyone’s a critic, even your own children. Maybe especially so. “Just be patient.”
“I’ll be asleep by the time we get to the good stuff!”
“Maybe if someone stopped interrupting and let me continue, we could get there.”
The other child shushed their older sibling, heeding the warning. They both settled back down among the covers if only for the promise of a belated bed time.)
-started into his routine. The bad part about having and keeping a realistic cover was that it was, in fact, real. Including the course work.
He had gone in search of somewhere that was not cluttered with a roommate, as strict about food as the library, and still had wifi. The local coffee shop, or tea shoppe, checked all of these boxes. He ventured inside early on a Saturday morning, before it even had time to get crowded, and stood at the counter, waiting to give his order.
