I have some fun thoughts for you, S!!
Do you ever think that Guy is thankful that he has his mom’s hair color and texture(?)? Do you think he resents his nose or his eye color or his eyebrow shape for being the same as his father’s? Guy looks like him- he has the face of the man who beat the daylights out of him for nothing. Do you think that when he gets glances of himself in the reflections of windows of his hair frizzing in high humidity of Manhattan in the summer he’s reminded of mr. perfect, the one who could do no wrong, Mace? What would Mace think of him now- reborn angry, just like their father.
Okay so I’m about to get pretty deep with this reply, because damn these are fun questions in the sense that I will love answering this but…damn at what cost………ALSO SPOILERS DUE TO CHARACTER DISCUSSION BELOW!!!
I think it’s honestly something that I can personally relate to as someone who bears features that are unique to complicated family members and all the baggage that comes with it. I think that for someone like Guy, who feels everything so powerfully, and wears his heart on his sleeve, it’s hard.
It’s so difficult to bear the ghosts of the people that you fought for their love and approval only to come up with nothing in return, and then be forced to bear the legacy of that dearth of love on your body every waking day. I think that this goes double when concerning that those features are linked to someone who caused such pain, and makes that it that much more excruciating. Bearing that legacy when you want to live up to it, only to find yourself abjectly hating it, doing everything you can to deny it later, is a terrible gift that keeps on giving.
And it gets worse especially given the fact that there was that terrible dynamic that his father openly created between him and Mace—that of the scapegoat v. golden child dynamic, respectively, that ultimately becomes bastardized after Mace’s death. How terrible, that someone who was the golden child, but still fought to make you find worth beyond all of the devaluing that your father put upon your shoulders, that convinced you to make something of yourself, returns back from the grave.
Something that should, even in a universe of amazing fantastical things, be celebrated—only for your brother, who fought for you to turn your life around, to echo your father who was a vicious, mean man? To repeat the cycle again? To prove that nothing was broken, only postponed?
(Hope you enjoyed the take! I’m off to go make more fic and shed a tear lol)
