as soon as i showed mack the video, he was bouncing off the walls with anticipation.Â
iâd come across the trend of calling your boyfriendâs friends to see if they lie or not about him being with them.Â
now, with macklinâs friends in particular, this idea happens to be a little more complicated. when your boyfriend is constantly traveling around the country for work with his best friends, you really donât have many opportunities to build good relationships with them.Â
especially when you âand your boyfriend âboth happen to be chronic introverts.Â
mack lays beside me on the couch, already giggling like a little kid pulling a prank on his parents. âhurry up! iâve been waiting all day,â he whines while tilting my phone toward him to see if I have a contact pulled up yet.Â
our first victim, will smith (hockey), is showcased on my screen, ready to call. his contact name causing me many teases since it was first discovered.Â
sue me for not wanting people to think iâm calling will smith... (actor).Â
laughing at macklin, i roll my eyes before looking at him seriously. âokay, you have to be quiet though. you know heâll hang up as soon as he thinks itâs a prank.âÂ
he immediately goes dead silent, nodding quickly.Â
smiling softly at his antics, i brush his hair out of his face and press a quick kiss to his forehead. in return, he snatches my phone and presses the call icon.Â
shaking my head, i scoff. Â
the phone barely rings before willâs panicked voice sounds through my phone speakers. âhey, are you okay?âÂ
instantly channeling a stressed tone, i sigh quietly, convincingly. âuh... actually, not really. iâm sorry, i just have to ask you something.âÂ
his response is immediate, relieved. âoh, so youâre okay then?âÂ
mack raises a brow next to me, staring at the phone like itâll personally answer his unasked questions.Â
i realize that my unprompted call âand the fact that macklin isnât with him right now âprobably caused him to think something physically happened to one of us.Â
âoh, yeah, sorry. i didnât mean to worry you. i just- is macklin with you?âÂ
i rush the question out with conviction, forcing my voice to sound more worried than itâs ever been in regards to mackâs whereabouts. Â
thereâs a pause... then a simple question, not giving anything up yet.Â
âwhy?âÂ
heâs suspicious. macklin is covering his mouth. i kick him.Â
âwell...â i sniffle to make it sound more believable, âhe hasnât answered me for hours, and he said he was going to be with you all evening.âÂ
i donât say what iâm thinking exactly, letting will put the pieces together by himself. macklin laughs quietly next to me.Â
my foot makes contact with his ribs this time.Â
i hear willâs footsteps on the other side of the line, clearly pacing now, connecting the dots. âheâs not answering you?âÂ
i have to pause, pressing my hand to my mouth to stop myself from laughing, before i answer him. âno. i assumed you guys were doing something and he just hadnât seen it, but now iâm getting worried.âÂ
i donât hear willâs voice for a hefty minute after that. iâd have thought he figured it out and hung up on me if it werenât for his loud pacing in the background.Â
âum... i need to call you back.âÂ
he doesnât wait for a response. the sound of his steps cut off suddenly. gasping, i whip my head to macklin. he looks at me equally surprised âboth of us unsure of what just happened.Â
then his phone starts ringing.Â
his eyes go wide, freaking out. âwhat do i do?!âÂ
âanswer it!âÂ
he fumbles with his phone as he answers, immediately falling into character. his voice coming out chill... too chill.Â
âhey man, whatâs up?âÂ
âwhere the fuck are you?âÂ
willâs voice comes out more serious than iâve heard it before. from the look on mackâs face, he relates. âwoah, dude, whatâs wro-âÂ
he doesnât get the chance to finish his sentence, will interrupting with a particular protectiveness i wasnât aware i'd earned from him.Â
âstop. iâm not in the mood to deal with some bullshit right now, macklin. why the hell is your girlfriend asking me where you are? you better have the best fucking excuse âespecially after lying to her by telling her youâre with me.âÂ
he leaves no room for mack to turn this into a joke, clearly not willing to mess around with a situation like this. something tells me that mack has never been acquainted with this side of his best friend before. a good thing i suppose.Â
mack, trying not to burst out laughing, tries to redirect the question. âfuck, she texted you? why didnât she just wait for me to respond?âÂ
this doesnât do anything to deter will. âno, she called me. and she didnât wait because she sounded worried as fuck about you, while youâre doing God knows what. she said itâs been hours. where are you?âÂ
answering his question isnât optional anymore. his patience is wearing thin.Â
âi- well... funny stor-âÂ
the phone call ends.Â
we both stare at each other in awe. the giggles having cleared out at the intensity of willâs voice. âi did not think heâd get that ma-âÂ
cutting mack off for the third time âthis time unintentionally âmy phone rings again.Â
i donât have to check it to know whoâs calling.Â
will smith (hockey)Â
clicking the accept button, i rush to put it on speaker. âhello?âÂ
he doesnât wait to rat out his best friend. âheâs not with me.âÂ
covering my mouth with my hand, i rush to put my phone on mute. whispering to mack, âwhat do i say?âÂ
he whispers back, as if talking louder would cause will to hear our plotting.Â
âact distraught. ask where i am.âÂ
taking a deep breath, i unmute my mic, breathing a little unevenly. âwhat? where is he?â my voice coming out pitchier than i intended. Â
it does the job.Â
a sigh sounds from my phone speakers. âi- iâm not sure. iâm so sorry. i called him...â i wait for him to continue. he scoffs, thinking of his conversation with mack. âfuck, iâm so sorry, i think heâs with someone, y/n.â Â
the words escape him too quickly. the concept of his best friend doing something like this pains him. heâs upset with macklin. heâs upset for me.Â
macklin mouths something to me. he knows i canât read lips for shit.Â
i press mute again and tilt my head at him. âwhat?âÂ
âwe have to tell him that itâs a prank. heâs going to kill me.âÂ
i nod quickly, knowing that neither of us expected will to take it this seriously.Â
unmuting, i clear my throat. opening my mouth to admit to our antics, will speaks up again. âiâm so so sorry. i swear i didnât know anything about this. if i did, i wouldâve- God, i donât know. i wouldâve done something though.âÂ
macklin, like the little asshole that he is, bursts out laughing. sudden, loud, and irritatingly infectuous. i chastise myself for laughing along with him.Â
i can see tears in his eyes, sending me further into my hysterics. my state only has a ripple effect on him.Â
âuh... hello?âÂ
iâm not even kidding, willâs voice makes me start crying. by the time we collect ourselves, tears are streaming down both of our faces.Â
âoh my gosh, will...â i pause to laugh again. âwill, iâm so sorry!âÂ
beep beep beep.Â
the phone call ended again. Â
my neck hurts from how fast i turn to look at mack. both of us are calm for a second before a text comes through.Â
will smith (hockey)       i hate you both. tell mack to watch out at practice tomorrow.Â
and just like that, weâre bent over in laughter again.Â
