they saw you from across the room and they HATE your vibe
I'm convinced this was his thought process π
Realising I only have a week to post all the art in my drafts before season 5 comes out π³ genuinely this has been there since August
i was bored and did this
Side note: itβs interesting to me that Maeve knew his name and appealed to him by saying it, while he was only ever Homelander to Stormfront (iirc?). It hammers home how his relationships change, and how his positions in them change. There was a moment, before the show, where there was a possibility of humanity and vulnerability for him. Later, he embraces being a symbol, especially for Stormfront (who pushes him to have this view of himself).
To mirror that, itβs interesting to me that he KNOWS Annieβs name but refuses to call her that. Sheβs always Starlight to him. βIs that your secret identity? Charming. I gave up on that a long time ago.β
Ask and you shall receive @deliciouskeys
βI need this for my meds.β Homelander is clutching the half empty gallon of milk with both hands like Maeve has come to snatch it away from him. βThey have to be taken with a milky drink. Milk enhances absorption, okay?β
As if to prove his point, he takes three more pills from the blister pack and washes them down with, that's right, more milk, of course. βIt doesn't say how much milk though. Maybe I should get some more to be safe.β
Maeve picks up the box on the table that says Malarone in big blue letters. βWhat do you even need these for?β
βMalaria prophylaxis,β Homelander says, wiping his mouth. βI'm going on a mission to a Malaria area. I took all of the pills, so that probably means I should take more milk as well.β
Normally, she'd tell him taking a whole pack of most medications would fry his liver, but this is Homelander. He's chugged a full box of Tylenol without any adverse effects. His liver will be just fine.
βYouβre not going to get Malaria,β she says instead.
βYou donβt know that,β Homelander spits back at her, like he's been waiting for her to object and preparing his defense. βRemember when I had the flu?β
Maeve does not remember, though she does remember Homelander pretending to be ill about two dozen times over the course of their relationship. Maeve used to play along because it felt easier to make him tea and tuck him into bed than to argue with him.
βYou know I get really sick when I get sick,β Homelander continues without waiting for a response. βMy immune system just overreacts. It's not my fault.β
βRight,β Maeve says. βHow long are you even going to be there?β Judging by his past 'missions' to the African continent, she doubts it'll be more than five minutes, if even.
βAll it takes is one bite,β Homelander counters immediately. It does sound a little rehearsed.
Maeve is laughing now. βHow are the mosquitoes even going to get through your skin?β
For a moment, he looks puzzled. Clearly, he's not bothered to think this one all the way through. He's not giving up so easily though. βYou don't know what kind of crazy V'ed up mosquitoes they have over there.β
Maeve wants to tell him not even Vought would be stupid enough to create Compound V enhanced mosquitoes, but she's not sure that's true. Vought is full of bad ideas, and there always seems to be someone willing to sign off on even the worst project proposals. The proof is standing right across from her, holding an almost empty milk container.
Maeve does feel sorry for any protozoan that might accidentally end up in Homelander's bloodstream, with or without Malaria prophylaxis, but she doesn't want to drag out the debate.
βListen, I have to go. I have a media thing in five.β
She's expecting Homelander to protest or to find some pretext to keep her around a little longer, but he just nods. βTell them downstairs to restock my fridge properly,β he says. βI'll need to take my meds for seven days after I'm back.β

i miss maevelanders dynamic very much
It's funny, you know, of all the people here, I've known you the longest. Sometimes it just seems like you're the only person I can lean on.
Consider... yuri Maevelander
anon. what's it like to have such an enormous and juicy brain?
imagine just the MOST toxic homoerotic girlhood best friendship and that's what you have with these two. Homelander is positively obsessed with her, always wanting her attention and companionship. who needs boys when they have each other? insurmountable tension between them that Maeve knows the name for, but Homelander hasn't quite wrapped her mind around.
i can see their relationship following a pretty similar trajectory to what we see in canon, except they're the "gal pals" whose relationship is Vought's best known secret. they're both "single," always together, and anyone who shows interest in Maeve ends up dead.
when they do finally kiss, Homelander is initially furious. confused and struck by the shame of something that goes against all her Vought standard programming. but it disappears in a flash when she realizes that yes, yes, this is exactly what she's been craving, what this terrible tension between them has been all about. and then she can't stop kissing her. always hungry for more.
maybe Maeve thought she could snap her out of her insanity with a little gay panic. maybe she thought Homelander would become less destructive if she came to terms with her desires. instead, it only gives her obsessive claim legitimacy. π
