I think Martin just sees John for who he is, nothing more. John is a dxck, sure, but he's not a bad person. he doesn't enjoy cruelty, or manipulation for it's own sake. and I think that while John has to improve a lot, I also know that he's already went through plenty of character development
also yes, John treats Martin badly, but he still treats him the best, which says a lot. I'm not saying that's enough, but in the context of John, the fact that Martin was the first — dare I say only — person he tried to personally reconcile with after he came back has huge implications imo.
