I just think maybe without them around the meaning of the title Archivist would have become obsolete and the ritual would no longer actually work. And unlike killing him or the blinding solution, it would have been painless and hurt no one but his institute in the process

TMA 118 Masquerade. This is it. This is the big one.

Okay, Martin finally getting to do something - something that could be dangerous - and he’s enjoying it so much! Martin has such a rebellious side that he keeps neatly hidden and finally he lets it go free.

Everyone always underestimates Martin - even Jon, at first. But Martin has a lot of strength and courage and rebelliousness underneath the tea and jumpers.

Meanwhile Jon is freaking out over cobwebs (brilliant writing, to put Martin’s rebellion and Jon’s fear side by side)

Elias well aware that Martin will do anything for Jon…

Love Martin getting angry that Elias doesn’t consider him a threat, or dangerous, and Martin gleefully proving him wrong. I know Jon and the others are on a dangerous mission, but Martin is so much a hero in this too, standing up to Elias.

Oh, it’s so sad, Martin admitting, defiantly, that he has feelings for Jon even though he treats him badly. And interesting that Elias admits he should have found a way to destroy Martin via Jon - but couldn’t. He says because of time but perhaps because he just couldn’t, truthfully, find it?

And Elias destroys Martin, as he said he would, via his mother - and yet Martin continues with the plan. Broken and destroyed, he still carries on. Have I mentioned how much I love Martin?

so when i listened to this scene for the first time around i had a thought that was like “does elias have a point :( jon really isn’t that nice to martin :((” but no, being able to reflect on it now i can call bullshit

because i (and i think a lot of people) started listening later, the way jon treated martin in s1 and s2 was still fresh in my mind. and obviously the way jon acted in s1 (that behaivour mostly stopped after martin’s statement) and s2 (he was treating everybody terribly) was awful

but if we look just at their interactions in s3, most of what jon has done is to check in with martin and make sure he is doing alright. they might not have spent a lot of time together and they may not be super-close but during this time they were closer then anyone else in the archives and were each other’s friends

what hurts the most here is martin’s reaction

yes, he is exaggerating for the sake of fooling elias but i think at this point, he genuinely doesn’t think jon cares for him that much- because we as the audience get to see the most of jon’s feelings, we know that’s not true but he isn’t the most emotive and martin probably stills thinks jon sees him as someone useless

that’s his own terrible self-esteem getting in the way of the truth
