Qunari Vitaar
Dorian reaction to him finding out that the inquisitor (Male Lavellan) has been willingly drinking magebane for most of his lift to suppress his mage ability. (Maybe because the clan only like some mages) Hope that’s enough information not used to doing these. Love reading your writing.
He was dumb for not seeing it earlier, at least he found himself thinking so as he stared at the glass bottle stored in the Inquisitor’s quarters. Dorian could recognize the red liquid anywhere, people had done everything from lace their weaopnry in it to force-feed it o their children. The large door opening and familiar steps making their way out the stairs forced him out of his own mind, putting it down on the desk as he slowly turned around.
‘‘Dorian? I don’t remember inviting you here, not that I complain’‘The Inquisitor let out a laugh, only to stop dead in his tracks when he saw what Dorian had been looking at.
‘‘While I normally don’t judge people for their drinking habits- I’m afraid this is an exception‘‘Lavellan could see Dorian clench his teeth, his lower jaw tensing up as he spoke and crossed his arms. Drinking Magebane wasn’t painless, it could bring migraines or cold-like symptomps as it completely drained a mage from it’s mana, something extremely unhealthy that the elf had come to learn the hard way.
‘‘Dorian, There is an explanation for this’‘His voice was wavern with uncertainty, hands tugging at the various facts he was wearing.
‘‘Oh, I’d love to hear what justifications you have for doing this to yourself on purpose’‘ Dorian hastily pulled the chair from the desk to him, sitting down on it and staring at the Inquisitor. He looked like a mix between a dissapproving parent and a hurt friend.
‘‘Dorian you must understand that all Dalish clans work very differently, do you remember Minaeve?’‘ The Inquisitor spoke softly, as if afraid others would somehow hear them through the thick stonewalls of Skyhold.
‘‘When she showed magical properties the threw her out Dorian, they left her to die. Keeper Deshanna saw people act like that- she knew it happened but she wouldn’t be able to live throwing out a child Dorian. But you also can’t have mages running around with nobody to teach them.’‘ As he was speaking his hands were moving, gesturing as if to prove his point with how awful the treatment was. And it truly was; some dalish clans were no better than the brutal shems who forced them into slavery- murdering and torturing everything from their own clansmen to passing travelers.
‘‘The Keeper didn’t have the resources nor time to train me, teach me how to handle the magic and the fade. So I- We..’‘HIs voice got more silent for each word until he eventually just looked at the bottle on the desk. Most mages felt their stomache drop from merely seeing something similar, and the Inquisitor drank it multiple times each day.
‘‘They gave you Magebane? To surprsess it so they didn’t have to teach you?’‘ Lavellan had expected Dorian to sound more angry, but all the Tevinter mage could muster up was complete and utter disappointment, not at him but at the keeper. The Inquisitor nodded, eyes not moving from the bottle.
‘‘I got used to it eventually, the nausea isn’t as awful as many think. I know I should be able to just stop taking them, but I have no control over my magic Dorian- none. I could become a danger for everyone involved.’‘
The Inquisitor wasn’t wrong, one of the many reasons children are taught to control their magic at such a young age is that it becomes more powerful with age; more deadly if you asked the Ferelden chantry. Dorian looked at the Inquisitor, a heavy sigh escaping him.
‘‘I will speak with Vivienne about this, Inquisitor- this isn’t right. You can’t do this to yourself.’‘ His words were heavy with guilt, possibly for not catching it sooner. Lavellan slowly nodded, gaze still not leaving the bottle even as Dorian stood up and moved out of the room. Inside that bottle was his entire life, the entirety of his worth in the clan. He knows he should feel revealed that it was Dorian who found out, and not Cullen or worse- Solas. Yet he can’t help but feel total and utter fear at the thought of the others knowing his dirty little secret, knowing that he wasn’t what he said he was and that he lied to their faces.

Dragon Age thoughts - Magebane
In researching for a fic I was frustrated that there is so little on Magebane in the actual lore but I guess that just let’s me make things up :)
In DAO is only a poison to coat melee weapons but I think it makes sense that it could be applied in several ways much like a healing poultice vs potion. I would actually think it would be likely a potion application would be popular in Tevinter as a way to disarm an enemy before striking.
If it was taken orally, Magebane as a drug might partially metabolize in the liver so it would need to be stronger if you drank it (first pass effect of the hepatic portal vein system if you are curious).
I found it interesting that lyrium is used in making Magebane in DOA. Two of the other ingredients are corrupt agent and concentrator agent. These agents merely have a description of what they are thought to be made of but what if there are multiple ways to make them?
There is a bug where Magebane can increase mana. I actually think that would be fun to think of the bug as canon - to actually make a way a lyrium potion could create a reverse effect via drug interactions with Magebane depending on the ingredients used in each potion.
I am a giant nerd who thinks to much about these things.
Magebane by Stephanie Flint Flint provides an accessible perspective on the morals of magical compulsion while maintaining the fast-paced fantasy of previous volumes.

"magebane this isn't the game for cleaver, get helm" -our Dampeer. Tell me that shit before I already have Sustainer, and I disagree anyway! If you can have it in that 15-20 minute range, why the fuck not? I was literally about to order it at 15:39 when the enemies conceded, already sitting pretty with 3-0-3 on the board at 328 GPM, which could only go up from there.
