If Scott Meyer had any bravery Phillip would have been the bad guy in the first book.
Alright so, understand this one's from only the first three books, namely because that's what was out when I was younger, so there was enough nostalgia to get through them, but also because I have a lot more books I'm trying to get through right now and thanks to a few problems in this series it's a bit hard for me to get through them.
But heres another review i guess
Book review for the magic 2.0 series:
It's not quite a lit RPG like the rest of what I'll probably be reviewing on here, but, in my opinion, the difference between 'transported into a coded system based on fantasy' and 'finding out your entire world is code, getting in trouble with the government and hiding away in midevil England to act like you've become magical sorcerer' is negligible enough that I think it's alright for it to be here.
Thanks to this being a bit divorced from the usual group, there is a couple niceties. A lot of the tropes that plague lit RPG are completely absent. No single chapter/ exclusively fan service beast people, none of the stat page stuff that can be really tiring for a lot of people. The sci fi half of the concept isn't completely ignored or half mentioned, despite being mostly comedy, it genuinely explored what a simulated world might be like. Id even say it's one of the best investigations of the concept from a more positive angle.
Then there's the kind of problems, there is a lot of 'boys will be boys' stuff in here, which on one hand is addressed to some extent, like with martin having to address that just not hitting on a girl isn't enough to not skeev them out, but also not endlessly pressuring them to think your the best ever, but on the other hand there's a lot of times where ribbing turns into cruelty and it's just not properly addressed, like literally every 'prank' scene within the books. That does mean these are flawed characters, and given it's actually weaved into the plot you can come in for that, but it also doesn't go fully away when the develop, so if locker room stuff is nauseating for you, it might be better to skip out on this one.
Theres also the 'kind of' problem with the women. Their much more actionable then most scifi/lit RPG type stuff, but it is on the long list of 'yes, the first man they meet is going to be the one they end up with' even if the two main women in the first three I would say are actually interesting, flawed characters. Brittany has much less of this problem, but gwen is, later on, mostly defined by the ways in which she clashes and interacts with martin, rather then allways developing on her own, and there's a lot of women being alien creatures to the men, though again, the fact that the men are also shown as overly emotional, prideful people makes that a bit better? The best scenes are the ones where everyone's exasperated about each other, with all very bad reasons for why. Also I don't know if Atlantis is really clever, or misogynistic.... or both. Essentially don't lump it in with harem, rape fantasy or any of the genuinely horrendous stuff in isekai and lit RPG, but onto the long list of being a little better about it would make it a top ten, for me at least.
It is absolutely one of the better in the, let's call it 'group of really smart guys get in trouble and nearly kill each other' genre, like i.t. crowd or *eugh* revenge of the nerds, but I still wouldn't recommend this first to women, like I might with threadbare or so I'm a spider so what(yes it's an anime, it defined the genre on both sides, sue me).
If you want an interesting sci fi, alot of shenanigans with idiots fucking with each other, or the somewhat existential concept of being able to edit your own biology and the world around you as long as you know c++, id say give it a shot. Honestly, I want more people to read his one, I have a lot of half formed opinions on it that I want more people to help put words to.
Okay, I'm nearly done with Out Of Spite, Out Of Mind & I'd like to request membership in the Brit Haters Club cause girl WHAT THE FUCK??
First off, was there a fuckin gas leak?? Why is everyone in this book so fuckin stupid except Gwen & Jimmy?? Now he's one of my favourite characters cause the rest of y'all are fuckin morons!!
But Brit's the dumbest of all. Maybe I'm too poly to understand but I truly don't get how bothered she is at the idea of Phillip hangin out w Brit The Elder. I understand her bein upset about bein lied to & the secrets kept, but she had an issue w him seein her before all that.
Also her freak-out over no one helpin her doesn't hold any water! It's not like Phillip, Jimmy, BtE & BtME didn't just spend MONTHS tryna figure that shit out without tellin you to keep you safe & not scare you.
If it was meant to be some commentary on women havin to do the lion's share of work while men pretend to help, I would understand that, but if that's what it's meant to be it's poorly done & Scott ain't got the range for it.
And regardless! Even if you think no one is gonna help you, takin a beat to at least have some amount of certainty before you do digital brain surgery on yourself is maybe a good idea.
It's so selfish too because, yes, this will eventually happen to you & you're the epicenter. But this has already affected Phillip & all of Atlantis. It's bigger than you & may kill everyone in existence, past & future. It's fuckin childish to ignore that.
AND ANOTHER THING
When she went to change that code, she had everyone in the mime boxes. They couldn't move, couldn't speak, couldn't use magic, and because they couldn't change anything, couldn't die. If she'd fucked herself up to the point of bein incapacitated, she'd have just resigned them all to a fate worse than death.
RIP to the whole crew, if my future self came back to tell me to do somethin or not do something, I'm just gonna get along w her & listen. & if I lived in that world? I'm avoidin most of these people like the fuckin plague.
TINY fandom but I will still post about it
In Scott Meyer's book series Magic 2.0, there is a whole society of sorceresses who use computer science as magic and create literal Atlantis for themselves to live in
but.... WHY ARENT THEY GAY
when you are surrounded by very intelligent women who are just like you why would you decide to surround yourself with literal medieval oafs who are just there to look good?
or with modern men who are only a little bit more emotionally intelligent than them??
there should be lesbians in Atlantis everywhere but it seems there's no mention of them at least where I am in the series and that makes me sad
One time I was out on a walk, smoking weed & listening to an audiobook, and it was about this guy who discovered life was a simulation that can be hacked with computers, and he ends up going back in time to become a wizard because Plot Reasons, and meets other wizards who discovered the same thing. And so he gets Wizard Training which is honestly just like, a crash course on making macros in the command line console to make flashy shit happen. And he shows him a few basic 'spells', like copy/pasting objects, flight, teleportation.
Yeah but so then he showed him how to delete objects and the main character is like, "haha what if i used this on you?" and his mentor looks him dead in the eyes and is like
I have just given you the power to delete anything and anyone who stands in your way, with no trace. No one knows you're here. No one knows you can do this. No one can track you down. You could wipe me off the face of the earth and there would be no evidence; All that stands between you and supreme cosmic power is a literal button press away.
anyway i went inside and hugged my parents dog and cried because I kept imagining if someone had hit delete on her
i love scott meyer and the goodplace and discworld get out of here!! whats your fav scott meyer book?
My current favorite is Off to Be the Wizard, but I loved the whole Magic 2.0. series. The audiobooks add an additional fun element - the voice actors are very good.
I have to because it's funny. SMG4 as Magic 2.0 quotes that live in my head rent free (not fully accurate I'm mostly going off memory)
*SMG4 crew in the middle of nowhere on a large mountain that they were teleported to*
SMG4: Mr. Puzzles, why did you do this?!
Mr. Puzzles: Oh! I wanted to show you guys my pajamas! They're very comfortable. And I was also hoping you could read me a few pages of my book before I go to bed.
SMG3: So... this wasn't you?
Mr. Puzzles: No it wasn't me!
Mario: Octopi are the spiders of the sea!
Meggy: Or are spiders the octopi of land?
SMG4: Why are you so unafraid about giving me a ride?
SMG3: Well, it's common knowledge that all wizards have sworn a vow of celibacy
SMG4: ...
SMG4: The only way we'll ever trust you again is for you to die! And then we'll say, "Wow. He didn't betray us again."
Mr. Puzzles: *dies dramatically and leaves a tombstone behind that says "Here lies Mr. Puzzles. He never betrayed us again."*
