Magickal Names?
What are are Magick names?
Many Pagans adopt a magical name upon their initiation into the Craft. This can be a name you select for yourself, or one given to you by someone else. When I found mine I chooses it for myself. The magical name is usually only revealed in a ritual setting, and isn’t usually used outside of the coven or group. Some Pagans have two magical names -- one which they use in public and one which is known only to the gods and members of the person’s coven. Some covens would have a magical last name where everyone adopts this last name. Other covens have a certain word that would be part of the magickal name like everyone in one coven would have "moon" or "wolf" etc somewhere in their name. Those type of covens usually based the group names from totem animals or whatever type of Magick they do as a group or the coven had a patron God & the names associates to the God. Selecting any name is a PERSONAL DECISION, but it is not required of people in all traditions.
Why would you want a Magick name?
In the past it was legal to discriminate pagans; weather it be in the work force, or from any type of business of not serving you etc. So many elders of our society when they started their paths, having a pagan name is like a username so no one would know it was them or able to trace back to their life. Some was scared of sharing such paths to their children cause of the discrimination. Nowadays we have laws that stops such discrimination (Religion protection laws and discrimination laws where it protect its citizens from discrimination of race, age, religion and sexual orientation). However that doesn't stop people of harassment to others and family members from disowning you much like being part of the LGBT+ community. As well Politicians who doesn't understand & practice the separation of church and state. Sadly there are still countries that bring pagans or any other religion is illegal and the punishment of practicing is death .
As well in the 1980s there was a Satanic Scare.
How do you find or make a Magick name?
There are so many ways you can find and pick one. If anything it will take you much to do research and time to find the right one. Most people would go of what they like, god type of names, or their totem animal or their favorite colour. How many pagans find their names is through mediation, research, a priest/priestess picks a name in a ritual setting or some people just know. You can have short name or a long name, whatever you like and prefer. You can add your legal name into a magickal name as well if you wish. Examples are; Silverhawk, Red Raven, Moon Lily, FairyMoonStone, Misty Meadow, Leia Dragon etc etc.
Another way is use your birth number. How to know yours is:
If your birthday for example is August 2, 1988 you would start with the numbers 821988 = 8 + 2 + 1 + 9+ 8 + 8 = 36
Now take those two numbers (3 and 6) and bring it down to a single digit: 3 + 6 = 9 . That number -- in this case, 9 is your birth number.
Use the grid below to find a name that corresponds to the number 9 (or in your case whatever number is your birth number) by calculating the sum of the corresponding letters.
1 = A, J, S
2 = B, K, T
3 = C, L, U
4 = D, M, V
5 = E, N, W
6 = F, O, X
7 = G, P, Y
8 = H, Q, Z
9 = I, R
This example is 9 which the magickal name would start with an I or a R. Names that comes to mind are Isis, Irin, Isabel, Ix, Raissa, Rune, Ravine, Rain, Riverine, Rowan, Rhene and Rhiannon. Sadly none of these names work into 9. If you don't like any of names you can expand your name and just find one that equals into you number. Or use words that start with I or a R like Iron, Ice or Red. Examples; Ironheart or Dragonlily (where these two names work into 9).
I have always found this way of finding your name very difficult. It's was one of the reasons why I didn't use this method when I first found my magickal name 9 years ago. However weirdly enough the last name of my magickal name number is one of my lucky numbers. So if you can't find one that goes with your birth number, go with your favorite or lucky number.
Anyway, lets say you’ve decide you like the name "Red Oak". Using the letters in “Red Oak" you would take the numbers from above list, 9 + 5 + 4 + 6 + 1 + 2 = 27. From there, 2 + 7 = 9. If the name you like doesn’t match your birth numbers, try some creative or alternate spellings to see what happens. For examples use the letter K instead of C or use Y instead of I etc. Or if there are more ways to spell a word depending on country or language like the word Fay, Fae or Faye.
What is your magickal name?
Because magickal names are personal I would only share the last name of my magical name. It is SettingMoon. I feel my first name however is coming to an end as I have left my maiden phase of my life and into motherhood. I have not found my new name yet but I will when it comes to me.
Why did you choose that name?
I love the moon and I like sun sets. I like them together.
Names that you may wish to Avoid!!!!!
Another bit of advice -- generally, the titles Lord and Lady are reserved for people who are elders or have a significant amount of leadership experience under their belt such as priests and priests. In Wicca its those that are past their second degree initiation. To name oneself Lady So-and-So without any credentials is considered presumptuous by many Pagans. Likewise, in many traditions it’s seen as hubris to give oneself the name of a deity. You may want to choose a name that indicates your dedication to a god or goddess, but don’t co-opt their names. A good example of you want to indicate yourself to Athena a good name may be Athensia or Athina.
As well there are names out there that are so overly done as well those of name that is "cool" or mainstream names in the pagan community. Merlin, Morgana, adding Raven or Wolf in the names are always main stream.
Other type of names that may have risen eyebrows would be names that associates with the main stream religions and few people may ask you about it. Such as Jesus, Lucifer, Christopher (this name is among the converse as of late about Columbus and the Saint) and others. Other names would be names in popular tv shows or books. Such as Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, Daenerys Targaryen and so on.
As well names that associates with negative slang pagan terms. Such as Fluffy Bunny, Cowan and Warlock.
If however you feel that having Merlin or whatever mainstream name IS part of your magickal name then go for it. No one is stopping you. Just beware that if you go to a pagan festival or other gatherings you may meet and find any pagans that has the same name or similar name as you much like going to school with so many Ashleys, José or Jesse or Jesus.
And when finding your Magick name please make sure it's the right one where you would use it for a long time to come until you feel that you are in a different phase in life or grown in your path. Don't change your name once every few weeks or pick a name that may sound silly in the future. You may find that later you would feel silly of introduce yourself to others with a name like Fluffy Willow Bark? People like me would miss hear this name and think you name yourself, "Fluffy? Will it bark?" With an accent.
***NOTE: if by any chance I used your legal name or Magick name as a examples in my post it was all accidental and random. If you wish for me to delete any names that I may use because you don't want YOUR name used please let me know.

Magic Names
I was just reading on some Wiccan traditions (everyone practices differently). I stumbled upon Magic Names which I hadn't given much thought to before, I just felt my actual name was who I am. However the more I think about it, the more it appeals to me. Do you go by a Magic Name to the deities? What's your opinion on Magic Names? Send me a message, I'm rather curious what you have to say.
Why this name
Lightfoot, the Path Wanderer.
It is odd, it is not from my tradition. It is heavy. It won't be used much publicly.
But it fits right now.
Lightfoot. I tread lightly in both the real world and the spirit world. I watch my carbon foot print and I am learning to watch what footprints I leave for others.
Each word leaves a foot print. And while often my words are correct, they do not belong. (That isn't right either, they do belong, but it may not be my place to give them).
I long for quite. For peace.
Path Wanderer. I know my role is to help bridge religions, and faiths and practices. My role as a healer is to help people find their path. To do so, I must wander many paths. They are not mine, but they intersect for a spell and then part.
So for now, Lightfoot, the Path Wanderer will work.
