Shaylees magic is blue and light, she's great at potions and defensive spells, she also does a lot of everyday use magic. Her magic blasts can only hurt but not enough to kill.

Aquatas magic is purple and dark, she's best at seances and spells, she can see the spirits roaming the earth and eventually learns how to control and summon them. She has more offensive magic and her hits can be deadly if she's not careful. Because of the nature of her magic she is plagued with nightmares.

They can use the others form of magic but certain things come very easy for both of them. Eventually Aquata does learn how to use healing magic as it works well with the profession she chooses later in life.

Taako and Lup were the elven equivalent of 8 year olds when Taako cast the spell to give Lup the body she wanted. Anyone who learns this gains a bit more respect for child prodigy Taako.
