One of the first projects students make is deceivingly simple looking stool. Watching students work through and problem solve while building these stools was a wonderful experience. It’s not to often as an adult we really get to work through leaning something new, all to often a google searched video tutorial is what helps us problem solve. At the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship the classes are small in size which means one on one time with instructors is common. Around the campus are various assortments of wood to be used in all sorts of projects, what looked liked a pile of logs to me was a promisig project to some of the students. Before a shoot ever happens I love to get on a call with a subject (if they have the time) and talk a little bit about them and their process. I then can use this information as a starting point for research about topics I don’t understand and for coming up with initial ideas for images. When Peter mentioned there was a blowtorch involved in his process, the 8 year old in me got overly excited. Anytime an image can combine two unique textures is a good time.
