Strengthening is forecast, and #Helene is expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches the Florida Big Bend coast Thursday evening. Weakening is expected after landfall, but Helene's fast forward speed will allow strong, damaging winds, especially in gusts, to penetrate well inland across the SE United States, including over the higher terrain of the southern Appalachians."

Hurricane Idalia has intensified into a dangerous Category 4 hurricane with fierce winds of 130 mph – capable of widespread catastrophic damage – ahead of the storm’s expected landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast Wednesday morning. Numerous residents had been warned flee, schools are closed and the National Guard is preparing for rescues. Idalia is expected to make landfall Wednesday morning as “an extremely dangerous” storm on Florida’s Big Bend coast, bringing once-in-a-lifetime levels of damaging winds and storm surge, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Despite the dead air during commercials, it's worth checking out particularly if you live in an area not usually affected by hurricanes.
This is Florida's second major hurricane in under a year. This particular part of Florida has apparently not previously experienced a major hurricane (Category 3 or bigger). Idalia will also have a major impact on Georgia and the Carolinas.

We’re three away from breaking the record for number of Atlantic named tropical cyclones in a year. The seas are warming and making tropical cyclones more frequent and more powerful.
It looks like Louisiana will be getting its second major hurricane of the year this weekend.
