I had piano lessons when I was a little girl. That's how I know how to read sheet music. However, I didn't really understand half of what I was taught until many years later, when I became a self-taught guitar player. This was the order my piano teacher in which instructed me to practice the #Majorscales C, G, D, A, E, B, F... When you are playing a piano, it's easy to see how you gradually exchange a white key for a black key; F becomes F# (fg). C becomes C# (cd)... Until by the time you reach the key of B, you have all five black keys and only two remaining white keys! ° ° ° ° ° This image is designed to help you see which the notes change with each scale. To some extent, it may also help you see the special relationship between the keys in this sequence (C, G, D, A, E, B). G is the fifth note in the C scale. D is is the fifth note in the G scale. A is the fifth note in the D scale. E is the fifth note in the A scale. B is... You guessed it! the fifth note in the E scale. ° ° ° ° So, Ev, what about F? C is the fifth note in the F scale. But since F contains a flat, and C has no flats or sharps, we tend to start playing in the key of C Major. My piano teacher taught me F last... And honestly, since it is a hurdle to achieve an F chord on the guitar, this feels appropriate. Ha! ° ° ° Also note that I omitted the colors of the notes not played in each scale today.
