Many thanks to all of the wonderful people who came out to watch our show! It was a magical fun experience with children dancing and playing... We really enjoyed the opportunity to be heard! Biggest thanks to the team that made it all possible; Lorraine (aka @jotss2009), Pete (aka @disilvestroplayground), as well as Teddy... & the band: Nero @we_could_be_neros (guitar/vocals) & Daveed @phillydrummer ๐๐ถ๐ธ (at DiSilvestro Playground) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSMXBomLmcv/?utm_medium=tumblr
This little girl up front was one of the first people to run forward when @karensmithdrums welcomed the crowd to join in the drum-jam! In this clip, her gaze is following a butterfly overhead ๐ฆ I took this footage during last week's performance from the DiSilvestro Playground... I was thrilled to see kids playing, adults hanging out, music being made; it was almost like a time before 2020 ^^ Today, it's my turn to perform~ what lovely weather! Let's play... I'll bring a couple extra guitars for anyone who wants to jam along- or kids who want to explore the strings ๐ธ๐ถ๐จ๐ #Philly #communitymusic #familyfun #whattodo #Philadelphia #bringthekids https://www.instagram.com/p/CSHiIyIjEyA/?utm_medium=tumblr
Tomorrow I will be performing with a band for the first time in over a year~ looking forward to playing alongside @we_could_be_neros & @phillydrummer at this lovely #southphilly #playground ๐ธ๐ถ๐จ #makemusic #community #familyfun #freeevent #bringthekids (at DiSilvestro Playground) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSFgJk_pyFJ/?utm_medium=tumblr
Patsy Catsy Cline has been keeping my dad company in Airville while I #housesit and hang out with other people's pets in Philly... Aside from missing her, I am loving being back in the city; riding my bike, playing open mics, seeing so many friends after over a year~ Anyone looking for a #housesitter / #petsitter feel free to DM me. ๐๐ถ๐ธ๐จ๐ธ #catsanddogs #walkthedog #Philly #Philadelphia ๐ก (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR10RHfjZ6-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Down the rabbit hole ๐๐ Day 33 I was born on the 3rd day of 1983... 3 - it's a magic number ^^ (at Airville, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CORiJk5DOZ3/?igshid=13kyf1i31a38c
Counting the Omer... Those of you who understand my obsession with color as sound may see my fascination with these 49 combinations~ as well as the concepts they signify on the Tree of Life. A friend recommended counting the Omer to help me through my grief... Thank you, Michal Pearl ๐ Day number 1... into day number 2 tonight Week 1 of 7 ^^ Source: https://opensiddur.org/prayers/solilunar/solar-cycles/sefirat-haomer/the-order-of-counting-the-omer-in-the-spring/ (at Airville, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNAYLfKDIhM/?igshid=1wofhew2zd5l
Very nearly finished painting this #dragonfly Today, I'm choosing to be thankful for time alone - something I haven't had in months~~ My Philly host is away visiting family, and I am here, playing taxi to my dad who decided to show up to visit my mother without informing me... (he doesn't like driving in the city - so, I have been his driver to the rehab). Umma is only allowed one visitor per day, no matter what. He told my brothers, but not me... He brought her Thanksgiving leftovers, but none for me... But he doesn't realize that- "I won't stay that late..." is no consolation when all my mother wants is familiar company outside of medical care providers. *Sigh* Just venting. I am still so much more fortunate than thousands of people... I am going to continue creating, painting, playing, singing~ grateful that I have a place to "squat", as my host put it earlier this week........ Happy Thanksgiving, ya'll- whether you are with loved ones or not ^^ https://www.instagram.com/p/CIEVqrcD9R5/?igshid=m0ox70ormivy
It has been two days since ์๋ง was transferred from HUP to Penn Rehab. Our neurosurgeon made the effort to see my mother right before she was transported to wish her well~ if you ever need #neurosurgery - go to @pennmedicine and ask for Dr. Choudhri ๐ง ๐จ๐ฝโโ๏ธ Not only is he impeccably trained, he is also kind and able to patiently explain some pretty complex neuroscience in simple terms. He's good at every aspect of his job! ๐ฅ๐๐ฒ Riding here on my bike, I was on the same street as the ambulance... I watched them take her in to start the admission process before biking to a local Korean take out spot for #๋น๋น๋ฐฅ - her first Korean meal since before this all started, 3 weeks prior! It was a celebration of her overcoming so much~ and the beginning of her recovery journey in #rehab ๐ We are still reading books! Now, I am supplementing her novels about Korea with Eckhart Tolle. To recharge myself, I continue my music and practicing with watercolors... This image is something I painted last night ๐จ๐ถ #aneurysm (at Penn Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHg2amCDMrL/?igshid=1kafuh2eidd7a
My mother's first smile in weeks since her emergency air-lift to the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania! ๐ I took this photo yesterday, post- #surgery at #HUP ๐ฅ๐ค ๐ I have been thinking hard about whether to share it publicly... Much of my mother's head had to be shaved, and I want to be respectful, but as my dad said, "It's just hair! I don't care whether they had to shave her whole head to help her get better~" โค๐โค๐โค๐โค๐โค๐โค Because everyone has been so supportive and asking about her well-being, I want to share this personal family story... My mother was born in Korea ๐ฐ๐ท in 1953, when the country was torn into two parts by competing foreign powers. Korea was still suffering from shortages of food and medical care due to Japanese occupation for nearly 30 years prior... And my mother was just a babe when she and her four older siblings were suddenly orphaned. Since there was no one to take responsibility for her, she was placed in the care of a Buddhist temple. Unlike children who were taken into churches, my mother was not treated as a child button rather a baby monk in training. Some of her earliest memories are of having her head shaved and being draped in their clothing... Having converted to Christianity upon immigrating to the U.S. - she doesn't talk much about this now, but during my childhood, she tearfully processed the experience many times with me. For her children, my mother prayed a life in the United States would insure we always had the freedom to choose our own paths~ education, careers, beliefs... And so, it is very appropriate that all of this happened the SAME week that we voted to celebrate the American democracy ๐ณ๐บ๐ธ I pray that she can make peace with her old trauma around her hair. What once reminded her of losing her parents can now represent her healing and reuniting with her husband, children, and grandchildren โคโคโค I must add my most sincere appreciation to all the nurses, doctors, technicians, and other @pennmedicine staff who have watched over her in the ICU and patiently carried out this highly specialized #neuro plan of care. It is incredible to witness the work you do! We are so glad we chose Penn! ๐ #aneurysm (at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHQ0lBtDbVE/?igshid=col2tg3hv56i

UPDATE: Umma is stable, breathing on her own. She is oriented x3 and moving her limbs. HUP has a plan to keep her in the ICU for 2 weeks before moving forward with surgical treatment. โค๐โค๐โค Here we are again... 2018 / 2020, three years of diagnostics & procedures to treat my mother's brain aneurysm, all right here in Philadelphia's Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Let me start by acknowledging that it is a large and complicated aneurysm, one of toughest many of the professionals here say they've ever seen. We were lucky to have it diagnosed- as it is all too common for patients to discover an aneurysm only after a rupture (aneurysm bleeding). Initially, we had vascular procedures, which involve tiny technology that travels through the arteries and veins to reach the brain... to minimize the risk of a catastrophic bleed, they placed platinum coils inside the aneurysm to clot the pooling blood. Then stents were placed to help redirect the blood flow away from the aneurysm. The last of these procedures was done in August 2020. For the past 7 subsequent weeks, Umma has been in the care of my father and I, as well as daily therapy from home health therapists and a visiting nurse. Unfortunately, Late Friday night, early Saturday morning, a bleed finally happened. It was small, minimized thanks to all the efforts put in by our HUP neuro team~ and now we have to trust their experience and follow their plan to balance her blood pressure and viscosity for 2 weeks while they consider the best options for further treatment. Open surgery may be necessary... I have confidence that my mother is prepared for any outcome. She has mellowed during these past few years. She released the stress and worry that once caused her blood pressure to spike. She has been enjoying life, family, food, and nature more than ever before... So, now we wait and pray and see what will happen next. Thank you all for being so supportive! Your prayers are much appreciated โค๐โค #aneurysm #neuroscience #neurosurgery #์๋ง (at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGkTHKOj-bZ/?igshid=1st4mvfgzbjlk
Please say a prayer for my mother today. We took her to our local emergency room in York PA late last night / early this morning, from which HUP retrieved her via helicopter. I cannot thank them enough. Their treatment has been nothing less than presidential... Thank you for valuing my mother's life as much as we, her family and friends do. We are so very glad we chose @pennmedicine โคโคโค๐ฅ #aneurysm #neuroscience #neurosurgery #์๋ง https://www.instagram.com/p/CGdIOFrjL16/?igshid=bcbpbmgrrmpw
#absenteevoting = #mailinvoting They are exactly the same thing. Just look at the application; it says "mail-in ballot". These unsolicited reminders to request #votebymail ballots were sent to my parents from the #republicanparty of #Pennsylvania ๐บ๐ธ Because we live in a rural area, sparsely populated in comparison to the neighboring cities, we will be voting in person... This is a privilege people living in urban areas lack. The current administration has spent the last four years intentionally dismantling convenient voting places, interfering and intimidating anywhere he is unpopular. We must vote, and we we must vote together~ one nation making its voice heard against this oppression. ๐ฏ#vote2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/CGDJCO9j4EQ/?igshid=xd3j6xxbkjbr
Sometimes I feel more like painting food than eating it... Maybe it's preparing meals for my mother and then not feeling my own appetite. Maybe it's the underlying worry that our country still has not resolved the COVID pandemic... Maybe it's how much I enjoy my journal pages in retrospect while my meals are less rewarding after they're over~ Just lots of feelings today. It was wonderful to share the holiday weekend with immediate family. It is wonderful to have a well stocked refrigerator full of delicious healthy Korean foods... But all I really crave is another cup of tea and Umma's recovery ^^ #watercolor #copingstrategies #caregiving #therapy https://www.instagram.com/p/CE4iT1rDdEO/?igshid=1g89h7ag6f5a8
