Been playing a lot of mahjong in both real life and in the video game Mahjong Soul lately and the contrast is so funny. In real life it's like:

I'm having so much fun playing and making new friends 😁 I'm learning so many different styles (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Pinoy, etc.) and having such a great time connecting with my community 😊 I love mahjong so much I've even bought a wonderful book (Mahjong: House Rules from Across the Asian Diaspora by Nicole Wong) and I'm going to buy a vintage set of tiles when I find the perfect one 🥰

But in Mahjong Soul it's like:

I once won a game with 95600 points. I lost another game with -3000 points. There are cute anime character avatars. Some of them are endearing like a shiba inu man. Some are THE MOST EGREGIOUS GOONERBAIT I'VE EVER SEEN. It's a fucking gacha. What an absolutely outrageous video game.

And yet! I still highly recommend everyone learn how to play mahjong, whatever style you prefer with whoever you like; when everything falls into place and you call out your winning tile and then show off your hand, it's a truly delightful experience. Come join me in the pit 🀄️🀄️🀄️

100 South games played!

Of note during the last 100 games: I had a 19 game lose streak against primarily hyper-aggressive players that kept getting rewarded which felt so bad Iput the game down for a bit because of it. My current focus is on raising DEF & lowering call rate, and learning to force myself to fold in dangerous situations. Otherwise I'm pretty proud of my stats!

I've been playing for four years, starting on 6/19/2022. I have nearly 1,800 3p games played, and 467 4p East. Until now, I primarily played to help me sleep, but I wanna get back to Gold and beyond!

Other than learning the rules, I've made a point to never look up a single thing about gameplay theory. I'm building my foundations on my own from base principles, from tile efficiency to mindgame techniques. I've learned that a lot of the stuff I have a name for in my brain have *real names* which is really neat, cuz it means I'm not just bumbling around in the dark and actually learning as I go!
