Hey guys, so I wrote this drabble based on one of the scenes from the anime that showed Makishima’s room and all the letters from Onoda stacked neatly in a corner and seeing his older brother smiling when he looks at a note that’s on the desk. (And isn’t that just the cutest thing that he keeps all of Onoda’s letters and is so excited to be back in Japan?) Anyways this drabble is based on a small head canon that Makishima Yuusuke gets embarrassed when his brother Ren asks about Onoda...so enjoy this trash.
Title: Absence
Rated: Everyone
Pairing: implied! Makishima Yuusuke X Onoda Sakamichi
“Another one?”
The younger green-haired male looked up at the man with short reddish-brown hair who smiled down at him.
“Yeah.” Makishima Yuusuke answered quietly as he grabbed the envelope marked ‘Onoda Sakamichi’ before opening it carefully and pulling out the papers containing Onoda’s latest letter.
“You always open those letters so delicately…” Ren mused as he watched his younger brother genuinely smile as he read the first page, “You must be very fond of this Onoda-kun.”
“Sakamichi is my kohai, sho.”
Ren chuckled, “He must be more than that if you call him by his first name so freely.”
Yuusuke’s face turned pink and he pouted slightly, “H-He’s my kohai Ren! Of course I’d call him by his first name! I call Toudou Jinpachi by his first name too…but…usually when we’re competing.”
“Are you fond of Toudou Jinpachi?”
Yuusuke’s face returned to its normal color and he gave Ren a look, “…I tolerate him…honestly he’s a little too much for me.”
“And Onoda-kun isn’t?”
“Sakamichi is different…he genuinely tries to understand other people…and he’s always trying to look for the good in others. Yeah…it was awkward when we first rode together but if you saw him climbing Ren…you would have been amazed at what he can do. And right now, he’s really trying his best to prepare for the Inter High.”
“He must mean a lot to you, for you to talk about him so highly.”
“…You’re right, sho.” Yuusuke said covering his face with a slender hand, “He’s incredible.”
“Then…maybe you should go see him.” Ren said.
Yuusuke’s eyes widened, “Aniki, I can’t just go to Japan just like that!”
“Why not? It’ll be the summer, your classes won’t start up for a couple of weeks, and…I think it would be good for you.”
“Ah…” Yuusuke scratched the side of his face and blushed, “I…I mean…is…is it that obvious?”
Ren smiled, “Yuusuke, you need to support Sohoku, I’m sure Onoda-kun would appreciate it.”
Yuusuke’s eyes softened and he looked down at the letter, “…I want to see him again.”
“Then you should make it happen.” Ren said, “And who knows, maybe you’d like to bring Onoda-kun to England? I’d love to meet him.”
Yuusuke let out a laugh, “That would be the day, sho!” he then stood up and made his way out the door, “I’m going to go for a ride Ren, I’ll be back later.”
Ren grinned as Yuusuke shut the door, “I guess the old saying is true...absence does make the heart grow fonder.”
Hi everyone, so I’ve recently become invested in the series Yowamushi Pedal, which has been breeding ground for OTPs left and right. (A usual occurrence with sports anime.) And of course this includes rare-pairs or unpopular ships, one of which I like. I have to admit...letting others read this fanfic makes me a little nervous since shounen-ai isn’t something I usually write a lot of...especially rare-pair shounen-ai...acutally this might be the first one I’ve ever written. But enough of my rambling...I’ll let you guys read it for yourselves.
Title: Gradual Climb
Rated: T
Pairing: Makishima Yuusuke X Onoda Sakamichi
Onoda Sakamichi adjusted his glasses as he exited the classroom and towards the locker where he kept his sneakers and backpack. Naruko and Imaizumi had offered Onoda the chance to hang out with them after school since no club activities were scheduled for that day but Onoda refused saying that he had other plans. It hadn’t been a lie…he really did have other plans…but for once, they didn’t involve Akiba.
Meet me in the clubroom after school. That was what the text had read on his phone when he flipped it open. Onoda nodded his head once before heading down the stairs towards the unoccupied clubroom... well he thought it was unoccupied when he slid the door open. Long limbs reached for him, pulling him inside until he collided with a warm body that was taller than his own. One hand grabbed the four-eyed otaku’s chin and tilted it up so his eyes met equally blue ones hiding behind a mess of green bangs with red streaks.
“Makishima-san…” Onoda said quietly offering a smile to the older climber.
“You weren’t followed here, were you?” Makishima asked.
Onoda shook his head.
Makishima’s eyes softened, knowing Onoda was telling him the truth, “Good.” He said quietly before leaning down and pressing his lips against Onoda’s. Onoda accepted the kiss, allowing for Makishima’s hand to make its way to the top of his head, fingers running though his short hair. In return Onoda moved an arm up so that his hand gently pressed against the back of his senpai’s neck fingers running along strands of soft green hair. Both their faces were flushed with pink as they parted for air before Onoda laid his head against the older boy’s chest and allowed for Makishima to wrap his arms around him. Onoda leaned further into the embrace his senpai offered. Most people would view Makishima as a frigid person whom no one could ever get close to but only few knew the truth. Makishima Yuusuke was actually a very kind individual who could be very affectionate when he desired to be. He just needed the right person and in this case it was a rookie climber with glasses. Although the others on the team knew how Onoda held Makishima in high regard and how in return Makishima offered Onoda the same respect, no one knew how deep their relationship had gotten.
It had started out innocently enough, but it wasn’t exactly there. Makishima played the part of the helpful senpai and Onoda the eager kohai. Makishima would offer Onoda advice…and practically mother him whenever he forgot his water bottle or tend to his injuries if Onoda fell off his bike even though Onoda insisted he was used to falling off his bike. Soon it turned to making sure Onoda was eating properly, making sure he didn’t strain himself whenever he said he biked to Akiba that weekend. (Makishima would never admit it but he once followed Onoda there to make sure he was okay. A big step outside his comfort zone.) There was no definitive time when the green-haired climber realized that he was falling for Onoda…it was just something that happened gradually.
And it eventually escalated into this.
Onoda had just gotten inside from the rain.
“Here.” The rookie climber felt a dry towel being placed over his head and looked up to see Makishima hovering over him.
“Thank you Makishima-san.” Onoda said as he started drying himself off. His senpai always seemed to know exactly what he needed when he needed it.
“Sakamichi.”
“Huh?” Onoda’s eyes widened a bit. Makishima never called him by his first name before…well no one really ever called him by his first name except for his parents and Manami-kun.
“Sho?” Makishima took a step back.
“Ah…sorry…” Onoda said feeling his face heat up, “I was just surprised is all…you’ve never called me by my first name before.”
“You don’t…mind?” Makishima asked as he scratched the side of his face with a finger. Onoda knew it was something his senpai did when he was nervous.
Onoda offered a bright smile, “Of course not!”
“Then…you won’t mind if I do this.”
Before Onoda could ask what Makishima meant he felt the towel leave his head and his chin being tilted up before warm lips pressed against his.
“You’re not planning to go home anytime soon are you?” Makishima asked as he nuzzled his face into Onoda’s short hair.
Onoda shook his head, “I can always call my mom if I need to.”
Makishima gave a content sigh, “Then I’ll spoil you for a bit, sho.”
Onoda blushed, “Makishima-san!”
“Oi, what did I tell you earlier about names?” Makishima asked pulling away from Onoda.
Onoda averted his eyes and his blush deepened, “O-oh…sorry…I forgot... Y-Yuusuke.”
Makishima smirked, “That’s better.” He then wrapped an arm around Onoda, “Let’s go, Sakamichi.”
Yowamushi Pedal: Relationship Analysis on unlikely pairing
If anyone of you has watching Yowamushi Pedal like I have, you would know that Onoda, the little blessed otaku, is the greatest cinnamon roll to ever exist in a sports anime. I mean, he literally went from ‘no way am I ever going to be involved in a sport’ to ‘cycling is fun’ and through that he’s obviously made a lot of gains in friendship and *cough* potential relationships. Now obviously, there’s a lot of potential pairings in this series that could involve Onoda, I mean it’s shipping hell really...he might as well be in an otome game.
Well this rant concerns one relationship that has really stuck out to me, and oddly enough Pixiv has a lot of fan art of these two: Makishima and Onoda. Yes, I know this pairing really isn’t as popular as others but when I saw how popular it was on Pixiv I started wondering what people saw...and needless to say...I had no idea that this pairing had potential. So here are a few of reasons why I think this is an interesting pairing. (Warning: contains spoilers)
1. Their relationship is a slow build-up.
At first, Makishima doesn’t think much of Onoda when he watches Onoda go against Imaizumi, but when Onoda catches up and faces off Imaizumi for the top of the peak he grows interested and even cheers Onoda on at one point. It was when Onoda took the peak that Makishima realized the potential Onoda had and started taking an interest in him. When Onoda first rides with Makishima he’s nervous because Makishima is well...scary. Not to mention they had nothing in common and had the hardest time talking to each other. When Onoda asks Makishima what he’s interested in and Makishima answers “Gravure” it’s followed by dead silence. Later Makishima admits he’s bad at socializing and is better able to communicate by climbing. Seeing Makishima climb then inspires Onoda who calls Makishima “cool” and means it. Makishima of course is taken aback by this since no one has ever described his climbing style as cool. He also has no understanding of why Onoda likes those capsule toys and is taken aback when Onoda takes pictures of one he assembled, but later when he sees the same toy, the Black Manyu, on Imaizumi’s water bottle he asks Imaizumi to trade with him and gives the water bottle with the Manyu to Onoda because he knew Onoda would like it and he probably wanted to look like a cool senpai. Also, during the Inter-High when Tadokoro fell behind because he was feeling ill Onoda offered to go get him. Makishima held his doubts at first but then placed his trust in Onoda and sent him off while the rest of the team moved forward. Onoda ended up keeping his promise and Makishima ended up being glad that he placed his trust in his kohai. There was a lot of trust placed in Onoda until the end. Also seeing Makishima hug Onoda was really cute considering this guy probably isn’t a body-contact type of person.
2. Makishima helped make Onoda stronger.
Of course, one could argue that there were a lot of people who contributed to Onoda growing stronger but as far as climbing goes and the Inter-High, Makishima was primary source of advice to Onoda. He was the one who pointed out that Onoda’s tires had been changed because he felt it wasn’t fair that Kinjou didn’t explain to Onoda that his bike had been modified while Imaizumi and Naruko were aware of the modifications on their bikes. By explaining to Onoda about the modifications and how to overcome the challenge Onoda was once again encouraged. Kinjou of course, thought Onoda should figure it out on his own but Makishima insisted that Onoda needed a push in the right direction. Makishima also explained to Onoda a lot about how the Inter-High works and the challenges that are presented at this event. Even after the Inter-High before leaving for England Makishima gives Onoda advice on how to pedal on the new yellow BMC he received.
3. These two actually have a lot in common.
As senpai and kohai these two clicked, and it turns out they were never that different from each other. If anyone watches Spare Bike and sees Makishima as a first-year you can definitely see some similarities he had with Onoda. Both were awkward in their own ways. Onoda didn’t have friends when he first entered high school and was only interested in anime. Makishima of course was seen as a social outcast and was used to being alone when it came to climbing. (Not to mention both singing while riding, lol.) Both are earnest in their feelings, like when Makishima told Kanzaki that he loved riding bikes. Onoda is also earnest in his feelings when he expresses them as we’ve seen repeatedly, such as when he gives Makishima 10 keychains because he wanted to express his gratitude. Both also are prone to knowing when something bad is happening such as when Tadokoro got sick and Makishima had a bad feeling that Tadokoro was still going to be sick the next day. Before Makishima left for England Onoda developed a bad feeling and ended up deciding to go with Makishima on that climb because...he knew something was up.
4. Onoda really misses Makishima.
Granted, Makishima probably should have told Onoda that he was planning to go to England instead of leaving so abruptly. Although he did not leave without a heartfelt good-bye, telling Onoda to take care of Sohoku and patting him on top of the head. He also tells Onoda that no matter where he is he’d always be riding beside him. (And boy did that give me the feels.) After Makishima leaves, Onoda struggles a lot because Makishima isn’t there...he still feels like he needs him. Luckily Teshima steps into this role and mentors Onoda who is still coping with Makishima being gone. Onoda also admits during his next race that Makishima is the coolest climber and uses this motivation to beat Ashikiba. Yes, Makishima becomes Onoda’s motivation.
So you see, there is a lot of potential with these two. As a senpai and kohai relationship, these two are definitely close. Makishima means a lot to Onoda and in return Onoda means a lot to Makishima. They’re both very sensitive, kind-hearted individuals with a lot of similarities even though they seem vastly different. And this is why these two are pairing material to some people. As I said before, Pixiv has a surprising amount of fan art of these two. You just have to put in: 巻坂
