Im back and I’m gonna be sad and angsty again lol
I’ve seen a lot of Clark/Superman having a much longer lifespan then a human, but have you ever thought how traumatizing and heartbreaking it would be (in my head this is Superbat, because it’s me, of course it’s going to be Superbat-) if the Kryptonian(?) lifespan is significantly shorter then that of a human’s?
Especially if no one knew? I imagine that at least some of the data got corrupted/destroyed when Clark crashed to earth and that particular nugget of information was apart of it.
(Also, Kara just didn’t think to tell Clark because, she didn’t know that the space pod that Clark crashed to earth in/the AI in the pod had been damaged and assumed he already knew, also she hasn’t really spent anytime around anyone over the age of 40ish so it never really came up (she assumed Alfred was human because. . . Reasons lol)
I imagine that the Kryptonians lifespan is only like 50-60 human years. (I know, I know ‘but the yellow Sun rays-‘ let me be sad and angsty, and suspended your disbelief for a minute)
And so Clark’s death happens really suddenly.
(I also feel like in this AU Kon and Jon actually benefit from only being half Kryptonians as well, I feel like that they have slightly ‘weaker’ powers when compared to Clark and Kara who are both fully Kryptonian, but this, as well as having a less severe reaction to Kryptonite would be interesting to explore)
(I’m sorry if this doesn’t make any sense, it’s like 1:00 am as I’m writing this and I’m really tired 🥱 😅)
Kara steps forward. "I am sorry. I didn't know he was unaware." She presses her hands together. "Please forgive me."
Bruce says nothing, staring deep into the fire, a glass tumbler in his hand.
"Bruce, please. I thought Clark— I didn't know the data was corrupted." She takes another step forward, and watches her cousin's fiancé stiffen. She hadn't understood why they were going through with it, she had thought it was a final wish granted. She hadn't realised they both thought they would have several more decades together.
"I wish I could go back in time and tell him. I'm sorry."
She can only listen to his trembling breaths, terrified to extend her hearing past this room. The anguished yell that startled everyone gathering for the ceremony, the sobs ever since. She thinks Ma and Pa's hurt the most to hear, she's never heard those sounds from them before. Or little Jon, as Lois held him back from going to the master bedroom.
She— she'd been trying to prepare herself, but the fact that her cousin is dead— she was never meant to see this day, she was older she was always supposed to die first if only she hadn't gotten caught in that asteroid field—
The hears something splinter and realises it's the floorboards, realises she's kneeling, realises those screams and cries are coming from her.
Her baby cousin is dead.
Kal-El is dead.
She alone is the Last Child of Krypton.
She's pulled into a chest, and manages to look up, finding Bruce cradling her halfway into his lap. "It's not your fault," he whispers, voice raw from his own earlier cries. "It's not your fault."
"I—"
"Couldn't have done anything. Don't blame yourself." He looks down, and she sees something bitter flicker across his face.
"What?" She asks, scared he'll take back his words.
"Do you know all my children have died?" She freezes in confusion, then the realisation settles in like a chill in her bones. Everyone knows what happened to Batman's parents. His children all died too...
"It's not your fault either," she assures, and sags into his grip. "It's no one's fault."
Bruce grunts, slumping back, and the two of them end up leaning against the side of his wingback. They stay there until the embers of the fire die down, until the silence is choking, until sleep finally takes over, and for a few blessed hours, they can leave behind the world wherein Kal-El is no longer.
