Young Slytherins

I find it interesting that we don't see many Slytherins who are younger than Harry. In fact, I can only think of three. Two of them, Malcolm Baddock and Graham Pritchard, are newly-Sorted first-years in book 4, with the most notable thing about them being that Malcolm is hissed by sixteen-year-old Fred and George Weasley. The third is Garrett* Harper, Slytherin's reserve Seeker in book 6, who is in Ginny's year and unfortunately didn't qualify for my list of possible good/neutral Lightning-era Slytherins for deliberately trying to collide with Harry and calling Ginny a blood-traitor. For what it's worth, I headcanon him being the Colin Creevey to Draco's Harry. I also have a bit of a soft spot for him, if only because his name is just one letter off from the most adorable tuxedo kitteh ever, may he rest in peace and fish. =^_^=

Malcolm Baddock

There’s literally BAD in his name. And Mal which means bad across a series of languages and is the prefix of exclusively negative words. (Malcontent, malice, malformed, maleficent, malign, malicious, maladaptive, malpractice, malediction, malfeasance, malevolent- those are just odd the top of my head)

I took Latin, and Joanne seems partial to it too- in that language Mal means “bad” or “evil.”

Hi! I absolutely love your blog. There was this fic I read on Ao3 in which H and D go back for their eight year. There was this guy I think his name was Baddock who tries to mess with Hermione and Draco punches him because she was having a panic attack. Later he sits with her at breakfast. That’s all I can remember. Thank you!

Malcolm Baddock || Slytherin || Fourth Year || Half-blood

Malcolm Baddock has always seemed a little more clever than he does ambitious. That is simply because Malcolm understands that the best foundation on which to build one's ambitions is on that of a superior intellect -- and that does not come as naturally to Malcolm as it does to some. It's not that Malcolm is stupid, by any means; he's a very smart boy. But he is no genius, and school is something he has to put aside a great deal of study for if he wants to excel -- and he does.

His parents are simple shopkeeps, his older sister a conductor on the Knight Bus. They're all quite content with their ordinary, mediocre lives...but Malcolm wants more. He wants a future in politics, a bright one that will see him rising fast and far. Fortunately he has the right attitude for glad-handing: charismatic and outgoing. Unfortunately he's also a little bit outspoken, and he's not very good at tailoring his opinions to suit the circumstance. He knows this is a weakness of his, politically speaking (he's been in enough heated arguments because of it) so he's trying to do better. To cross fewer people, and watch his words more.

To that end, he knows he has to be sure to voice the sort of opinions that will mesh with those of the winning side without entirely alienating the losers. Malcolm doesn't like the Carrows, and doesn't hesitate to complain about them, but he never goes so far as to criticize the Ministry that sent them to Hogwarts. After all, he wants to be part of that Ministry some day; griping about the boss before he even gets hired seems like a bad idea. But Malcolm knows the value of a loyal friend, and always tries to be one, and he can't shake his concern about Orla. He just hopes that when everything gets straightened-out -- and it has to be eventually; the Ministry has gone to extremes before but it'll swing back to equilibrium soon -- she'll understand why he couldn't denounce the laws against her. Orla will have to forgive him for keeping his mouth shut on the subject of blood-status; she always has before...
