“… Magnus...?”Alec walked into the kitchen, a little slowly. Why were the lights on? It was eleven p.m.!
And in the kitchen, of all places?
Alec knew Magnus was never a cook. Hell, he could barely prepare cereal without burning it, and yet, even after being with him for so long, even after seeing all he had seen of Magnus, nothing could have prepared Alec for what he saw next.
There was a frying pan on the stove. It was on fire. A large sack of flour was nearly empty, all the flour it was supposed to store was on the floor. The counter was covered in something sticky (what it was, Alec didn't want to know), and Magnus himself was holding a drooling Max in his arms, Rafael on the ground next to him, making snow angels in the flour and reciting an anecdote about a blind penguin and how it struggled to have a family because it was gay (Alec didn't even know penguins were gay).
Hearing footsteps, Magnus turned around.
“Alexander!” The relief was evident in his voice. “About time. How was the meeting with Maia?”
“The meeting was great,” Alec said. “What…what happened?”
Magnus looked a bit sheepish.
“We wanted to make you a surprise cake tonight,” Magnus said, “because of your late-night meeting.”
It was then that little Maxie decided he wanted out of his sleep-deprived dad's arms, and attempted to poke the flaming pan still on the stove.
Magnus quickly grabbed his hand, making the child coo a little. He sighed. Alec smiled a little, because damn Magnus could rock the pajama look.
His hair were ruffled, his eyes were soft and slightly red, the top of his sparkly pajama-set had a throw-up rag on one shoulder, his hands were free of nail polish, and his face… well, it was as beautiful as beautiful could get, and more beautiful than the word.
Alec strode forward and pecked Magnus on the cheek. Max's pudgy fist landed on Alec's face with a FWAP. Alec chuckled.
“We should probably do something about the fire,” Alec said.
"We need to, don't we?" Magnus sighed, exhausted. Man, it must have been a long day for him. Alec's parents had just gone back yesterday– something about a llama invasion? They weren't very clear.
Today was Alec and his husband's first day without their help, and it just happened to coincide with the day Alec's parental leave ran out. He hated leaving Magnus alone with the kids for the first time, but he couldn't help it. It was quite frustrating.
“Go put the kids to sleep,” Alec sighed,“and go sleep, yourself.”
Magnus felt a great rush of affection toward the other man. He found himself smiling– a tender, loving thing, that was bound to make Raphael and Ragnor puke if they were here.
Alec's heart melted at the look on his husband's face, so infatuated, so in love, so raw. They stared at each other for longer than either of them intended. They moved closer, and closer, and clo–
“EEWWWWW,"Rafe's voice shattered their moment, and both dads laughed at his expression.
What a shame. There were some things Alec had thought of to do that would make Magnus...– well… let's just say the fire would no longer have been the hottest thing in the room.
Rafe stomped out of the kitchen, making an exaggerated, disgusted noise along the way, just so his parents got the idea.
Chuckling at his antics, both men turned back to the flaming pan. A tad too late, they realised however, when they heard a beep from above them.
Both their faces wore equal masks of shock.
