grey wedding

written for @maedhrosmaglorweek day 3 ‘lordship in beleriand’. playing with the concept of elven political marriages for this one.

maglor tries to do his duty for the good of his people. maglor/wife, maglor & maedhros.

The weather was bleak at Maglor’s wedding, to match the mood.

The icy winds swept across the waters of Lake Mithrim, and overhead the clouds were black with rain. The couple wore heavy cloaks. By his side, Maglor’s new bride was putting on a brave face, but Maglor was certain that she wished to be anywhere else. She would be queen regent- but at what expense? Bound for time everlasting to a failing, kinslaying regent king; a stranger from a strange land, as a seal on the alliance between the Exiles and the Grey Elves of Mithrim - it was surely not what she had imagined for herself as a girl.

I cannot do this, Maglor thought, despairing. I cannot go through with this.

But he did not have another choice. His grip on the crown was feeble - he had never thought to inherit it, but Grandfather and Father were gone, and Nelyo-

Nelyo was not with him. He was not dead! Maglor would know - he would feel it - if he was. But he was leagues away imprisoned, and Maglor could not save him. He had taken up Nelyo’s regency and his duties, but that was all he could do for his brother. He knew it was not enough- Nelyo was yet one more person that he was failing.

“Now for the exchanging of the rings”, his betrothed’s father called. The chieftain of these Grey Elves, it had been his idea to join their peoples with the hand of his daughter. Apparently, such a thing was not so unusual, in this Middle Earth. With a trembling hand, Maglor removed his bethrothal ring. Help me, Nelyo! he thought, to the one who had always been there for him, I do not know what to do, I cannot do this without you! But Nelyo could not hear him, and in any case, Maglor did not know what help it was that he wished for.

His bride was intelligent and good-humoured. Maglor had spoken with Malrin of Mithrim several times over their year-long betrothal, and learned that they shared an eagerness to unite their peoples- the remainder of Father’s host, and a host of Grey Elves with no desire to live under the Girdle. He learned that Malrin enjoyed hunting and hawking, and was skilled at mathematics. She was a pretty nis, slender and named for her crown of golden curls. She had even claimed no anger for Alqualonde. But they did not love one another. Whenever Maglor wondered what Father would think of this, think of him, he despaired.

He dropped the old betrothal ring into his father-in-law’s hand, and Malrin followed.

This marriage meant everything. It would create a much-needed alliance with this group of neighbours, and prove to his brothers that he was not simply sitting in idleness with the crown- that he was a worthy regent.

Nelyo, I cannot control our brothers like you can - Celegorm thinks me too weak to stand in your place and Curufin will back him - Moryo will not pass judgement either way - which is a judgement itself - and Amras still has not spoken a word since that awful day-

They were somewhere within the crowd right now, his brothers, watching Maglor as they braced for rain. Always watching- when you wore the crown, everybody was always watching.

Nelyo, I am trying so hard, but I cannot find the right way to turn.

“Husband”, Malrin said quietly so that only he could hear, “your wedding band.” She held the silver ring in her small, soft hand, and slid it onto his finger as he nodded. He took up the matching wedding ring from a small page, and copied her. His throat burned. He faced Malrin, and saw that her eyes were wet.

Nelyo, I need you. You must return to me. You cannot leave me alone here.

“With these rings, Maglor of Tirion and Malrin of Mithrim are joined in marriage forever, and shall not be parted until the breaking of the world. And so too shall our houses be forever joined in friendship under the Lordship of Maglor son of Feanor...”

It rained all the way through the feast.

This is Malrin, also referred to as The Usurper, Dark Lady and The Enemy. Her name means "Lady crowned with gold". She's the Queen of the humans. She's the main character, but also villain of this story/ project I'm working on. What I can say is that she's a very dark character!

I also recorded the painting process. I’m not sure if you may be interested in watching the video with full commentary, so I’ll wait and see what you guys think before diving into the editing and audio recording!

summary: a recently uncovered second age poem reveals some previously unknown truths about the three women who wedded a son of fëanor. 

Introduction to “The Lay of the Three Wives of the Sons of Fëanor”

Destruction of records during the various battles and sackings that characterised First Age Beleriand, combined with the arguably precarious social position of women during that time and the fact that all of Fëanor’s sons are yet to come forth from Mandos means that little is known of the three women who were, at least for a time, married to a son of Fëanor. For this reason, this short poem, purportedly written by Maechenebeth Malfindiel - a jewelsmith of the Gwaith-í-Mirdain and amateur storyteller- in around S.A. 1300 is a significant historical document. 

The Lay has been criticised for being overly sympathetic to its subjects- it makes no mention, for example, of the rather uncomfortable fact that Maglor’s wife Malrín would certainly have been aware that she was marrying a kinslayer and ship-thief when she wed him, making her later abandonment of him over the Second Kinslaying seem less like the troubled conscience that Maechenabeth portrays, and more like escaping a situation that would have been politically disastrous to remain in. It also seems to portray the fates of double mass-murderer Morndis (referred to here by her Quenya epessë Meletyë) and Tindawen and Malrín who by all available accounts including this one killed no kin, as equally tragic. Nevertheless, as one of few surviving lays that focuses on these under-studied figures as opposed to their infamous husbands, it is a worthwhile read for anyone looking to gain perspective on the wives of Maglor, Caranthir, and Curufin. 

The Lay of the Three Wives of the Sons of Fëanor 

Young Fëanor wedded Nerdanel,

Of their love many lays do tell.

To Fëanor seven sons she gave,

And each was famed from crib to grave. 

Yet lesser known are each three wives

That three sons took within their lives.

The Dark, the Minstrel, and the Smith-

Their women passed on into myth.

Though few remember still their names,

Their faces, stories and their fames,

They need not fade into the night,

In song they may be brought to light.

Caranthir’s bride was bright as dawn,

When he saw her one glinting morn, 

In Alqualondë she did dwell,

Sweet Tindawen of sail and shell. 

Though Tindawen was mild and kind,  

And Caranthir a diff’rent mind, 

In early days he loved her well,

Until upon them darkness fell.

For then he swore his evil oath

And forsook she who loved him most.

He left her there upon the shore,

And to her kin bought blood and war,

And though she loved him still, she raged,

And from his book she tore a page.

She threw her ring, she cursed his name,

And then from him she ran in shame. 

Too late he realised what he’d done,

While brothers cheered for ships they’d won,

He wept regret and sorrow then,

For he had lost his Tindawen.

Thereafter Maglor found a wife,

In what was his great hour of strife, 

His brother gone, his role to lead

The Noldor in their time of need. 

Her cloak was grey, her hair was gold,

A chieftain’s daughter, brave and bold, 

Malrín her name was, Golden Crown,

They wed as Arien looked down. 

They married fast, to make a queen,

Yet soon true feeling grew between

The two of them, and so although

He lost the crown, she did not go. 

Through sudden flame and tears she stayed,

Although upon him doom was laid, 

But when his thoughts turned to the jewel

In Menegroth, she knew him cruel. 

She begged that he not do this deed,

He did not hear her, and indeed,

Her heart was sore, she knew she’d failed,

And when the Herald came, she sailed. 

The last wife married Curufin,

From her eyes tree-light shone within,

A Noldo of some small import,

In Tirion they two did court. 

Their love was fierce, their souls the same,

She stole his heart, he changed her name.

He named her Mighty, Meletyë, 

For her man’s heart, and gaze steel-grey. 

With him she raised her sword and slew,

And stole and burned to lands anew. 

In those lands she bore him a child, 

His hands were strong, yet temper mild.

Like the wolf-mother loves her brood,

They loved him with a fearsome mood, 

But their son could not bear their crimes,

In Narog he left them behind. 

Still wife and husband stayed as one,

“I’ll stay until our lives are done”, 

She said, and yea, she did not lie, 

For in Doriath both did die. 

And now we come to end our tale,

Of steel sword, gold crown, and white sail.

We know their names, their deeds, their doings,

Their loves that would become their ruins. 

Alas for three most tragic brides,

Swept from history like the tides

Of the Swanhaven in Aman ,

Back where the Noldor’s end began.

🚨 failmarriage alert! failmarriage alert! 🚨

lolol so Malrin is my Mithrim Sinda oc, she’s the daughter of a prominent chieftain of a group that very much do not want to be subsumed into either the girdle or the host of feanor. So Malrin’s father makes a marriage pact with Maglor (who is at the time regent bc Maedhros is on the mountain) that their group of Sindar will receive the protection of the house of Feanor but get to keep their independence. This type of political marriage is v alien to the Amanyar but Maglor goes for it anyway to keep a strong grip on the crown. Unfortunately they don’t have much in common - Malrin is not artistically minded, preferring hunting, hawking and mathematics. Also, it’s kind of an expectation when they marry that they’ll have an heir (and Maglor REALLY wants children) but Malrin does nooooot like kids and doesn’t want to be a mother ever, and can’t let her “mental shields” down to conceive.

Still they stick it out through most of the first age, until post Nirnaeth when Malrin has kind of lost everything and now her husband is planning on running up on her distant kin and killing a bunch of innocent people and she’s like actually… fuck this. And just leaves LMAO she straight up takes a horse and leaves in the middle of the night. She tries to send a raven to Doriath in warning but it gets shot down. Whelp. She makes her way to Balar where she lives under an assumed name (though Celebrimbor recognises her and they commiserate) and helps with the clean up of Sirion (turning even further against Maglor after seeing all that) and fights under Gil Galad in the war of wrath. She survives and sails back to Aman with Eonwe.
