The one scene i saw from 4x08, with Betty and Alice in therapy, is why I can still love Alice throughout all the shitty and inconsistent writing of her character. Not only is Mädchen just SO convincing and heartbreaking but you can always tell, even from season 1, how broken Alice is.
She probably never knew her father. Her mother was most likely a serpent or at least “trailer trash” who slept around and probably didn't give a damn about her children. Alice’s 1 relationship, with FP, was on-and-off. She didn’t have any friends. Her relationship with Hal was all a facade. Polly hated Alice for splitting her and Jason up and sending her away. Alice literally felt unloved her ENTIRE life.
Then there was Betty. A person she loved who actually loved her back. Alice went the complete opposite route of her mother, smothering her children instead. She probably thought that if she made them better than she was, they’d receive the love she never got and they would love her unlike the way she didn't love her own mother.
And while Betty didn’t like it, she’s still always show that she loves Alice. Betty has been Alice’s only consistent source of unconditional love. She’s pretty much Alice’s best friend. And Alice may have FP now but she is probably still scared after their past history that he’ll leave.
Put simply, Alice does not know a healthy way to express love because she has had so little of it in her life up until this point. Betty had her family growing up, her friends, her boyfriend. She knows the way Alice deals with love is unhealthy but she can't relate to it.
I just wish they could delve into the Smith’s past, along with the Jones’, so Alice could confront her past issues and her mother, finally start to heal, and change her current bad habits and fear of losing love.
