Riza
After I drop the updated paperwork with the receptionist, I turn around and walk back across the waiting room to where Roy is sitting impatiently. I glance up at my husband’s worried face and let out a grateful sigh that Maes is asleep in the car seat in the chair next to him. I’ve barely sat down on the other side of it when Roy turns to me, whispering across the space.
“I don’t like this,” he murmurs in a low tone. “This place is full of germs and…weird smells.”
“It’s a pediatrician’s office,” I remind him calmly. “They’re all like that.”
“But what if Maes catches something? What if he’s already caught something?”
“Roy–”
“We left him with Gracia for the afternoon the other day, and right after that Elicia came down with that stomach flu. He could be infected.”
I look down at our peacefully sleeping son and start to reply when Roy continues.
“Seriously, Riza. What if something is wrong? His last few diapers had a weird consistency. What if he’s sick?”
“He’s fine. It’s probably because I recently started giving him some of my food at mealtime.”
“What?” He jerks his head back. “Should you be doing that? What if–”
“He’s a year old now, Roy. It’s perfectly acceptable for one-year-olds to start eating some table food.”
“B-but what if he’s allergic? What if he chokes?”
“I’m trained in first aid and CPR, remember?” I remind him softly, reaching down to adjust Maes’ baby blanket. “I know what to do. And besides, I’ve only given him cooked carrots, green peas, and diced chicken so far anyway. I want to make sure this checkup goes okay before we introduce anything new.”
“Right.” He nods. “Okay.”
“Everything will be fine, Roy.”
“Of course.” He nods. “Wait. What if he hasn’t gained enough weight? What if he’s failure to thrive?”
“You’re kidding?” I frown at him. “Stand up right now and pick up this car seat and then try to tell me our kid is underweight.”
“Well, the car seat weighs–”
“You said last night I needed to go shopping for new onesies because the ones he has will barely button.”
“Right.” He slowly nods, conceding my point.
“Roy, I love you, and I adore the way you love Maes, but you have got to calm down.”
He opens his mouth to say something back when the door to the hall opens and a nurse in puppy-covered scrubs steps out holding a clipboard.
“Maes Mustang?”
“That’s us,” I say quietly, rising and hoisting the car seat off of the chair. “Let’s get this done.”
Roy falls in step beside me just as I reach the nurse, who greets us warmly and leads us down the hall to an exam room. We chat with her for a minute about his diet and his routine, and then she unbuckles him to take his measurements. As she’s lifting him out of the car seat, Maes wakes up and starts crying.
“I got him.” Roy takes him immediately and begins expertly soothing our son.
Also available on AO3! Warnings for actual cancer mention in the fic, nothing big, but in case it makes you squeamish. It’s the last chapter, then it’s back onto Hero of Ishval hopefully probably!
✨~Unforgettable moments between mother and son~✨ xD (Sorry, Idk how to do this a gif)
Camera Worthy
Hey all~~ Just wanted to share a quick little snippet from maeshughesofficial’s Reverse Dad AU, because what else can you expect of me. And for once, it’s only mostly parental, I even threw in some Royai!
Based loosely off of this piece of artwork that the entire world needs to see!
This whole thing gets a lot worse when you realize that for everything Riza feels, Roy only has a few months left to live :)
Words: 1368
Riza liked visiting her husband at work.
His staff was very friendly, and all acted as if she was part of the team. It helped that she was Black Hayate’s handler, and would join them very occasionally when Roy’s dog Snowball wouldn’t be enough, so on occasion she really was part of the team. They certainly treated her as such.
Not only that, it was nice to come in and sometimes find him hard at work. He had a very particular face when he concentrated, his eyebrows drawn together, and Riza always thought he was so very handsome. She could sit and watch him work for several minutes before he’d notice her…
And then, the way that his eyes lit up, like he was seeing her for the very first time all over again. He’d brush his work aside and stand, march over to her and scoop her up, spin her around, kiss her full on the mouth. “Riza!” He cried like they were young ones again, like they were just starting to date or newlyweds falling in love all over again.
She would never get over him. She didn’t know what she’d do without him. He was the love of her life and nearly everything that she wanted out of her future.

Riza
I’m walking down the hall to the girls’ room, carrying a freshly folded basket of laundry, when I hear hushed voices coming from the living room.
“She’s coming! Quick, put it up!”
“You put it up! You got it out!”
“Why can’t you—Just hit pause!”
“I can’t find the remote! You had it!”
“No, I–”
“Girls?” I stop in the doorway and do a Mom Sweep of the room—the fastest way to figure out what they’re up to. Given the secrecy, I’m not feeling confident it’s anything good.
“Mom,” Maesie blurts, standing up straight. “We…we were just…”
She looks over at her sister, and I raise my eyebrows.
“You were what?”
Matilda, the younger of the two, by twelve minutes, looks from her sister to the floor. She won’t meet my eyes.
“Well…” I sigh dramatically and set the laundry down. “If you won’t come clean, I’ll have to find out for myself.”
“Mom, no! We weren’t doing anything bad. It was just–”
“Just what?”
I watch silently as they try to hold a complete conversation through looks. Maesie is clearly in charge of whatever scheme is going on here. That’s her role as the leader and protector. Matilda is the follower, always looking up to her sister. They may be twins, but if you didn’t know, you’d think Maesie was at least a year older.
Matilda wasn’t as healthy when she was born as Maesie was. She was too small and needed a lot of extra attention. To balance things out between them, we gave Maesie the job of watching over her, and she takes the job very seriously. But that doesn’t stop her from pulling them into situations that get them both into trouble.
“Girls?” I cross my arms and look between them.
“It’s your old ice skating videos,” Matilda breaks first, squeaking out her confession. “We were just watching them.”
Hi! In honor of Mother's Day coming up, do you have any Parental!RizaEdAl headcanons?
TBH I don’t have nearly enough, but there’s never enough MamaHawk so I’ll give what I’ve got!
The only times that Riza left Roy in the hospital after the Promised Day was when she went to see Ed and Al, which she did quite often.
Riza often shows up at the Elric’s dorm with food, saying she “accidentally made extra”. After the first couple of times, Ed stopped questioning why the food she brought didn’t look touched.
Every weekend that the Elrics are in town, they make a point to go visit her at her apartment. They will walk Black Hayate with her, and go grocery shopping with her. She looks forward to it every week.
Riza is the one person that Ed genuinely feels that he cannot lie to. He has tried in the past, but it’s never succeeded.
Ed going to talk to Riza and learn about the Ishvallan War was not the first time that he’s done such a thing. He’s gone to talk over several missions he felt he wasn’t going to be able to handle on his own.
Riza often talks through what Roy was saying with Ed and Al, especially if she felt he was being too harsh. Just reminding them that no, Roy wasn’t being a total jackass, of course he cared, he’s just been worried, we all have.
Whenever Ed and Al are in town, she takes her extra paperwork and sits late at night in the office, because sometimes Al will join her, and sometimes he’ll even help.
She and Roy have both adapted a way to compliment Ed and Al without making them feel as if they’re being put on the spot. For Edward, they speak him up, literally. They ask about growth and aging, make sure he feels like an adult and an equal. Riza makes the occasional comment that she should take him shopping and get some new clothes; his looked a little small. For Alphonse, they make sure to speak directly to him when Ed is in the room, to make sure he knows that he is separate from Ed, and has equally valid talents and is an asset to the team on his own.
Al once transmuted Riza a nice scarf after the Promised Day, to cover the scar on her neck. She wears it whenever she’s out of uniform. Not because she’s ashamed of her scar, but because she was proud of the gift. Whenever someone asks about it, she is happy to share every detail.
Riza loves sharing her favorite books and poetry with Al, who has infinite time to read them. They often take time to talk about them when Ed is in the Roy.
Riza does not hesitate to remind the boys that they are loved. And it’s not entirely unheard of for her to express physical affection for them. These are the only reasons that she is not mocked for being entirely emotionless.
Riza is sometimes sexually harassed by men in other troops. Any of the Mustgang will jump to her defense, but Ed does it the loudest, and Al has the most lasting effect (besides his father, ofc).
And, in honor of the day, every Mother’s Day, Riza would receive a single flower on her desk without a note. It wasn’t until several years later that she found out who it was, when she spotted Ed and Al in a flower shop the day before Mother’s Day, purchasing the same single flower she received every year.
