So my grandparents mean well and do their best to use my correct name and pronouns. But when I say I like something feminine/dislike something masculine, they say it takes points off my “man card.” And while I know they’re just joking, if I’m not in the right mood, it hurts.
So I decided to make a list.
Things that qualify you for a “man card”
Saying you’re a man (even if it’s only to yourself)
Things that do not take away points
Wearing traditionally feminine clothing
Whether or not you shave any part of your body
On the other side of things, here’s what’s required to get a “woman card”
Saying you’re a woman (even if it’s only to yourself)
Things that do not take away points
Disliking traditionally feminine clothing
Keeping any facial hair you have
Whether or not you shave any part of your body
Things that qualify you for a “nonbinary card”
Saying you’re nonbinary (even if it’s only to yourself)
Things that don’t take away points
Liking or disliking makeup
Not looking completely androgynous
Preferring traditionally masculine or feminine clothing
Preferring she/her or he/him pronouns
I know these lists aren’t exhaustive, so feel free to add to them.
The only thing required to get your “gender card” is to say that you are (or aren’t) that gender. The idea of meeting certain requirements to be considered masculine/feminine/androgynous enough to actually be your gender is cissexist bullshit. The idea that not checking off enough boxes on the gender stereotypes list is dangerous and harmful. The idea that you have a “card” that could be taken away if you don’t behave a certain way is telling trans people that you only respect their gender if they fit what you perceive that gender to be.
Don’t let anyone pressure you into being someone you’re not just because you don’t fit what they perceive a man, woman, or nonbinary person should be. You be who you are. You have your card. Only you can decide what it means to be your gender. You have your card, and no one—no one—can take it away from you.
