Chris Claremont is the X-Men. After lagging sales in the late 60s Claremont joined up as a writer in the 70s and transformed it into one of the most popular comic books of all time.  He was the main writer for the comic until the early 90s and he created some of their best storylines and some of their coolest characters. 

Written in 1982 God Loves, Man Kills was one of the earliest entries in Marvel’s new graphic novel format.  Written exclusively for that format (meaning it didn’t show up a single monthly issues first) it tells a stand-alone story that stands up today.

Its about a big time preacher who feels that the mutants aren’t human at all, but an abomination to the Lord.  Because of this he sets out to completely wipe them out. 

The X-men have always been about outsiders.  They’ve stood in for people of color, for members of the LGBT community and anybody who feels rejected in some way by society.  In God Loves, Man Kills Claremont puts this theme front and center.  By having the villain be a man of God out to destroy the X-men and all mutant kind simply because they are mutants is something that continues to resonate.

Its  a great story with some really good art and it makes me very happy.
