Author Appreciation Week: Day 6
So pull up a chair while Auntie Concerti tells you a story.
Most people reading this will be familiar with, when getting to know a new friend, the process of feeling them out to find out exactly where their fannish tendencies lie. Because, “O YEAH I LOVE SCI-FI” has a range of meanings, and replying to the wrong person with “OMG LOL DID YOU READ THAT NEW MCU A:AOU ABO BDSM OT3 HS AU PWP on AO3!?” is a social faux pas from which one cannot easily recover.
So I’d met the-feels-assassin at work, and we hit it off, to the point where her boss once said to me, “NO YOU CANNOT GO TALK TO MANDY RIGHT NOW JUST KEEP WALKING.” And I delicately broached the subject of fanfic. the-feels-assassin replied with what I’ve come to regard as the Fandom Party Line, namely that of COURSE there are people who do that, all fannish endeavor should be encouraged, won’t hear a word against it, and so forth.
I offered to send some recommendations. She politely acquiesced. I sent an e-mail. Days passed, and I heard no more about it. I shrugged and let it go. Fanfic isn’t for everyone.
But one day, for reasons that I no longer remember, I was home from work, and the-feels-assassin was complaining about wanting something new to read. I sent her rageprufrock‘s “User Since.”
I got a message back. “OMG THAT WAS SO GOOD IT WAS THE SADDEST THING I’VE EVER READ HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO ME!?!?!?!”
So, spotting that opening, I sent scifigrl47‘s “Some Things Shouldn’t Be A Chore.” And it was all downhill from there. :)
I count unleashing the-feels-assassin on the fanfic-reading public as one of the really good things I’ve done for fandom. So some recs:
