Sorry if this is weird but do you have any tips on how to care for insect wings? Bee spisificly
Sorry this took me a while to get to!! One of my theriotypes is an insect (Jade mantis to be precise!) so I'm excited to answer this (:<
- Insect wings can be quite delicate, but they're not as delicate as you'd think. The network of veins commonly found in most insect wings (bees, cicadas, grasshoppers, mantises etc) keep the structure rigid and taut, and if any cracks/splits appear in the wing material, the wing structure keeps the cracks from opening further. If your brain is convinced that bug wings are very delicate, you may accidentally damage your wings more easily. Once your brain understands that insect wings are much sturdier than they seem, you'll be able to maintain your wings more.
- For those of you who have 'feathery' insect wings (moths, butterflies and similar), make sure not to touch or brush your wings too often. Moths and similar insects have a fine layer of scales coating their wings, which can come off the wings quite easily. Moths can still fly without these scales, but they do help with aerodynamics.
- If you feel as though your wings are becoming dull or crinkled, attempt to smooth them out (: This shouldn't damage them, and insects clean their wings with their appendages often!
- For bees and similar insects, rub your wings on your clothes to clean them (if your clothes are soft) or rub them against your arms (if your arms are dry/not dirty). Bees often exhibit behaviour like this, and all bee species take pride in keeping their wings clean.
- If your wings are damaged, you can most likely force-heal them through willpower. As your wings aren't/are no longer physical, they don't follow the laws of physical wings. Insects cannot heal their wings, and can't grow new ones if their wings get amputated. Luckily for us in this case, we aren't physically insects, and will be able to heal/regrow our wings.
