The afternoon setting sun flooded everything I could see in a golden hue, the wind whipping into the car from the wide open windows. Leaning back in the passenger seat, I let my head roll to the left so I could watch Tom focus on the road. God he was beautiful. The setting sun made him squint his eyes but made him ethereal, just human perfection.
He glanced over at me and flashed a goofy grin before looking back at the road, “What are you doing?”
“Looking at the most beautiful human being I’ve ever seen.” I responded, a smile tugging at my lips.
He let out his low, rumbling laugh before stretching his hand out to grab mind. Our fingers intertwined, our hands resting on my lap. He pulled our hands to his lips, pressing a kiss on the back of my hand before putting our hands back on my thigh. My cheeks hurt from smiling so much but I couldn’t help but smile when I was with Tom.
“So are you excited for the mountains?” Tom asked, eyes on the road but a big smile on his face.
I squeezed his hand slightly, “I’m so excited! A weekend away from the big city, peace and quiet, and you all to myself! What’s not to be excited about?”
“Fair point.” He laughed. God, I could listen to him talk for forever. “Do we need to stop for anything before we get there?”
“I think we have everything, but I could use a stretch if you don’t mind.” I shrugged, looking at the long stretched out road ahead of us. A sign for a rest stop whipped past my window and Tom put his blinker on.
“Sounds good to me.” He said as he drove down the exit ramp. We pulled into a parking spot and I slipped my shoes back on. I went to grab my phone but it wasn’t there. Tom was already out of the car so I looked for it around the center console of the car.
“Babe?” I called out, my arm reaching in between the seats. “Have you seen my phone?”
“I grabbed it for you.” Tom called out from somewhere behind me.
“Oh,” I laughed, turning to get out but Tom was standing-no, he was kneeling in front of me. As in on one knee. With a small black box in his hand. “Tom..”
“Violet, I wanted to do this in the mountains but I really can’t wait another minute.” He started with a gentle smile on his face, but I couldn’t quite see him through the tears in my eyes. “These last two years with you have been the best years of my life and I can’t imagine my life without you.” He opened the little box and revealed the small but elegant diamond ring concealed inside. “Will you please, please, marry me and make me the happiest man on Earth?”
By that point I was a blubbering, crying mess. “Of course.” I cried, wrapping my arms around him as I felt his strong arms wrap around and hold me.
“Here, let me make sure it fits.” He pulled me away from him and I stuck out my hand. With as much focus as I’ve ever seen him use, Tom took the ring from the box and slid it onto my ring finger with ease.
“It’s perfect.” I whispered, looking down at the glimmering ring. “It’s a perfect fit.”
“I love you, Violet. More than anything.”
“Tom, I love you forever.”
After quickly wiping my tears away, I gripped the steering wheel to the moving truck a little tighter. I was almost to the small town I’d call home once more. I had moved away nearly six years prior but I doubted anything had changed much. And it would be nice to see old childhood friends again considering I hadn’t been back to visit Pelican Town since I’d left. I felt bad for not visiting more, especially considering Grandpa had left his farm to me in his will when he passed away last year. Tom and I had planned on moving in and starting a family as soon as he finished his tour in Gotoro but things didn’t work out that way.
Passing through a giant stone tunnel, the truck was engulfed in darkness. The light at the end of the tunnel growing bigger and bigger each second before the truck was immersed in the soft morning sunshine once more. As I drove out of the tunnel, the forest opened up to reveal the entrance to the town. Turning right, I headed down the worn out gravel road that led to my new home and Grandpa’s old farm.
The trees opened up once more and the overgrown pasture flew by my window. I remembered running around in this pasture as a kid, playing with all kinds of Grandpa’s farm animals. They’d all been sold at auction when Grandpa got sick, I’d bet that Marnie had bought them all up to make sure the farm animals were able to ‘retire’ in peace. Marnie was good like that.
Grandpa’s old run-down cabin came into view as I drove up over a slight hill. It look dilapidated and weathered. Grandpa had moved into a retirement community a couple of years before he died, leaving the cabin’s fate up to Mother Nature but everything still looked intact. It just wasn’t all that pretty to look at but I could fix that.
It was bittersweet, seeing my childhood again. Knowing that I was doing what Tom and I had planned to do but without him was painful, but it was a small comfort being back again.
Pulling the moving truck up next to the cabin, I turned the truck off before taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. “We’re supposed to be doing this together, damn it Tom.” I muttered to myself, tears smarting my eyes again. We were supposed to move back to my hometown, try our hands at farming while working from our new home, have babies, and live happily ever after together. That was what he said he wanted and I just wanted him to be happy, I didn’t care where we were or what we did. Opening the door to the truck, I slid down from my seat and stretched my arms above my head. Taking a few steps towards the pasture, the warm breeze kissed me gently as a tear slid down my cheek.
The soft sunlight filtering through the large curtained window in my room woke me up gently, as it usually did. Opening my eyes slowly, I looked up at my ceiling and sighed softly. As I sat up, I looked around at my room full of packed boxes. They were full of clothes and small belongings, my whole life packed into a few cardboard boxes. I moved to sit up, stretching my arms over my head and my joints popping slightly as I moved.
Getting up, I walked over to my dresser and quickly changed into something to wear for the day. It was going to be a busy day and I wanted an early start. Once I was dressed, I brushed my hair and put it into a ponytail and declared myself ready.
The house was empty other than me and it hit me all at once that I really was alone again. Tom was really gone. I had been very diligent to push my grief aside as I made the moving plans and if I was being honest, all the planning had served as a distraction from the reality that the love of my life was no longer with me. I paused in the middle of the hallway as those thoughts struck me. My heart shattering all over again and tears forming in my eyes.
----
Sitting on the park bench nearest the bus stop, I couldn’t help the nerves in my belly and the constant stream of thoughts running through my mind. ‘What if he doesn’t like me? What if he thinks I’m ugly? Oh god, what if he’s boring? I never should have agreed to this stupid blind date! Damn it, James, why are you always pushing me out of my comfort zone?!’
“V-Violet?” A low rumble of a voice shook me out of my thoughts as I turned around on the bench. Standing there was a giant of a man with a kind but shy smile and hopeful eyes. And god, he was handsome. Like movie star handsome. Like I could look at him all day handsome.
“Are you Tom?” I managed to break my gaze away and look at my hands, which were visibly shaking. God he was going to think I was weird.
“I am.” He said and I could hear the smile in his voice and when I looked back at him, my breath was taken away. His smile was like pure, unfiltered sunshine. He moved around the bench and sat down next to me, every step he took felt deliberate.
When he was finally settled in next to me, I looked down at my lap. My hands were clasped together to make it less obvious that I was shaking in both nervousness and excitement.
“So...You’re the infamous Violet that James has told me about.” He didn’t sound disappointed.
I couldn’t help the small laugh I let out, “I honestly had no idea I was a topic of conversation for James until he told me that he had a friend that wanted to meet me.” I looked over at him and saw a small blush creeping up his neck and over his cheek. The way his shaggy blonde hair fell over his eyes made my heartstrings tug a little.
“I probably sounded desperate to you, I apologize.” His voice was like distant thunder, rumbling and strong. He let out a small chuckle, “Please tell me I didn’t sound desperate.”
It was my turn to laugh a little again, “No! Not at all. I promise.”
He stuck his hand out in front of me, his fist closed all except for his pinky. “Can you pinky promise though?”
I looked up at him with a stupidly large grin on my face, my cheeks heating up slightly and I knew I was probably red as a tomato. I wrapped my pinky around his, goosebumps crawling over my skin in excitement. “I pinky promise.”
----
“Violet, I’m going to miss the shit out of you.” James broke my thoughts away from those painful memories. He stood next to the moving truck, sweat dripping from his red face.
“I’m gonna miss you too, James. You and Molly have been so wonderful with helping me these last couple of months.” I said, sitting down on the curb next to where he was standing. Everything was packed away in the truck now.
We could hear Molly’s car before we saw it, the muffler was dragging or something. She pulled up on the other side of the street and flung her door open. “I’m back! With cold treats!”
James walked across the street to help grab the goodies that she had ran to grab. When they walked over to me, still sitting there, I couldn’t help but bite the inside of my cheek. James, Molly, and I had been close before Tom. I met them both in high school after I moved from a small town to the big city and James was my first friend there. He was already with Molly at the time and they had adopted me in their friend group but out of the group, the three of us were the only ones who still talked to each other. And then Tom came along, a friend of James’ from work, and we were together, it was like our group had been incomplete all along. The four of us were inseparable. But then Tom was gone. And our group was missing an important puzzle piece again.
“I got you a cookie crumble milkshake! I know it’s your favorite!” Molly interrupted my thoughts, making me aware of the fact that she was holding my beverage in my face.
I gave her a halfhearted smile and took the milkshake, “Thanks.”
James and Molly sat down on either side of me, both of them with their own milkshakes in hand. I looked down at the slightly melted ice cream in my hand as Molly set her head on my shoulder. “I’m gonna miss you, Vi.” She whispered.
“I’ll still visit. I’m only moving an hour and a half away, it’s not that bad of a drive.” I said, my voice sounding emotionless even to me. I took a small sip from my shake. “Besides, you guys can always come visit me. And I’ll still call you guys.”
They didn’t say anything. They knew I was moving to get away from all of the memories this place held for me. They knew I needed to go back to my roots in order to heal from losing Tom.
