This morning Gord and I took the subway straight to Harlem, NYC.
I was a little worried about what we would find when we stepped out of the subway station but it was pretty much what I was expecting, just a bit emptier and quieter. Crossing the street a taxi tried to push his way through the crosswalk, only to be cursed out by everyone crossing. The sun was hot today and there wasn’t much shade; walking was ten times more exhausting than usual. We quickly made our way to the Apollo Theatre - a classic Harlem landmark, walked down Malcom X Blvd. from W 124th to W 132nd, and then across and down W 116th - a street with tons of popular restaurants. We passed Red Rooster, a staple “Harlem restaurant” that’s known for being overrated and overpriced, and I looked for a burger joint called “Harlem Shake” (named before the Bauuer song became famous, surprisingly) to no avail.
After stopping by a Senegalese Restaurant/Bakery and picking up the best chocolate almond croissant I have ever had, we ended up having lunch at a busy restaurant on W 116th called Streetbird Rotisserie NYC which served Harlem and Street-Culture inspired dishes. The atmosphere was great as was the presentation and although the food was decent we were a little disappointed in it’s inventiveness. My rice - the New Jack Fried Rice, was simply just Chinese Fried rice with less veggies and a papaya salad on top. It was a good effort but it fell short. However, the EL GASPAR (Roasted Corn, Mayo, Parmesan, Street Shake) for 5$ was to die for, the creaminess of the mayo and the sweetness of the corn complimented the spices and the smokiness of it perfectly. Finally, we made our way into Central Park and walked back to our hotel (which is an impressively long walk in flip-flops).
