How do you write so well in English? I mean, Portuguese is also my native language, but I almost exclusively write in English. Sometimes I think I'm doing a great job with my fics, and other times I just... baffled at the English language and everything seems wrong. Tips? Advices? Any general nonsense to help a gal out hahaha #socorro
dflksvd;ksa; assim você me deixa sem jeito
That feeling of “sometimes it’s great and sometimes it’s garbage”? I think every bilingual person has it. I certainly do. Sometimes I look at the sentences I write and I question my entire existence.
The best thing to do is read things written by native speakers and watch movies/TV shows in English with the subtitles in English. The subtitles, in this case, help a lot to grasp the finer details of each sentence structure. Soon enough, I’ll be able to reproduce what you read/hear. Want to know what’s funny? When you notice the subtitle in English is not what is being said. Or that the subtitle in Portuguese is simply wrong. Happens more often than it should.
The thing about languages is that they each have their own logic. Take the positioning of adjectives, for example. in Portuguese, it goes after the noun. In English, it’s always before. When you start to actively notice these differences, you start to internalize them.
although I will never ever be able to say “I don’t think so” instead of “I think not”
I guess the best tip/advice I can give is to keep writing in English, You shouldn’t worry if you’re doing it perfectly or not. We’re always learning and evolving anyway, so if someone has a problem with how you write in English now, they are welcome to talk to you about in Portuguese. Let’s see how well they fair ;)
Don’t forget that, as writers, we each have our own styles. Sometimes the mix of our native language and the language we’re writing in results in an amazing style that isn’t technically correct but it’s still fascinating to read. In writing, there isn’t always a right or wrong.

I'm curious because I never know what to say when I'm asked about it - number 7 for the author ask 😀
7) when asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?
If this is supposed to mean “when people ask you about what you do with your life other than work a Saturday/evening job for shit pay and study how do you tell people that you spend most of your leisure time (thinking about) writing” then, lol.
Definitely embarrassed?? I mean, it partly depends on who I’m talking to, but generally if you say, “oh, I like writing” people want to know what you write about, and whether they can read it, and like??? Nah mate.
I mean, I have plenty of original stuff I’ve written, so it’s not like I have to confess that *gasp* I partake in FANDOM *cue Darth Vader music* but stories always just sound terrible summarised.
“Oh, I’ve written this book about an abused boy who lives under the stairs whose parents have died and this giant wizard comes and tells him that he has magic and he goes to magic school and btw there’s this evil wizard after him who killed his parents and they have a face-down and yeah.”
And that would be J.K. Rowling. How awful anything else sound?!
I mean, I could say, “oh, yeah, I write about really serious topics like how the oppression of women has backfired on men and I critique western civilisation’s self-centric politics and ideologies through the fictional tale of an old man living in Somalia” but a) I don’t, and b) while that sounds much more reasonable and grown-up, it also makes you sound like a prat. Sorry.
Bitches, I write about magic, dragons, and gay warriors, come the fuck on.
So there’s your answer, haha, in a very rambling, round-about way, which is totally typical of me… Oops 🙈 Thanks for asking! 💕

marieruby mentioned you on a post “God I want to like Philip, I do. But he puts Elisabeth through so much...”
@thedoctorsimaginaryamy forgot to tag, desculpa hahaha
Oh, I definitely don’t love him either. The shit he consistently puts Elizabeth through makes it impossible. That said, Matt Smith was my Doctor and episode 9 hit so many high notes for me that I’m finally able to relax and enjoy him to some extent you know? It was probably my favorite episode of the entire show because I just love the whole boarding school thing.
I haven’t finished episode 10 yet so we’ll see ^^
I’m just relieved I don’t feel the mix of intense indifference/annoyance I feel for Prince Albert in Victoria.
marieruby respondeu a sua postagem: Oi! Não sabia que você era brasileira. Eu também....
AI O QUÊ! CHOQUEI AGORA hahaha didn’t see this one coming. A sua escrita é perfeita em inglês!!
