And it just now dawned on me that part of it probably has to do with Lise being able to count on Maire to get her out of a fix if she's ever dealing with some asshole guy 

Lise would be all trying to let him down nicely and he'd be like "come on everyone knows the truth about you and I know you want to fuck me" and Maire would swing in like "lol bye" and throw him down a flight of stairs 

I just 

I want an AU where Lise and Maire run off to be happy wives and no one gets tortured to death or tied to chairs or smacked around and subsequently Obliviated.

RP confession: In a strange sort of way, Liesel *needs* Marilyn.

It seems counterintuitive to need a friend who has toxic views and awful politics and who makes a regular habit of throwing your boyfriend down staircases for no reason besides her own dissatisfaction with her childhood.

But left to her own devices, Liesel beats herself up way too much. 

She's trapped in an incestuous relationship and her automatic response is, this is a result of MY naivete. *I* brought this upon myself. *I* am not entitled to be hurt, angry, or vengeful. 

But when she sees Marilyn acting unabashedly horrible, it makes her own emotions okay. Marilyn brings with her a "safe space" where it is normal to be selfish and acceptable to be vindictive. 

So yeah. Don't mind me, I'm just having a moment of profound appreciation for everyone's favorite terrifying bully.
