🇬🇧 “Two years after my mother died, my father fell in love with a glamorous blonde Ukrainian divorcée. He was eighty-four and she was thirty-six. She exploded into our lives like a fluffy pink grenade, churning up the murky water, bringing to the surface a sludge of sloughed-off memories, giving the family ghosts a kick up the backside.” 🎈 Thus starts #ashorthistoryoftractorsinukrainian by #marinalewycka. Reading this for #readaroundtheworld project and it will cover #ukraine. It tells the story of a Ukranian family living in the UK. I love reading stories about living in another country cause I’m doing the same thing, I can relate. Many comments stated that this was an extremely funny, mad and hilarious book. Honestly, I don’t think it’s funny, at all. The characters are 2 dimensional and the book is just mediocre. I was thinking about giving it up when I saw this sentence:“In language are encapsulated not only thoughts but cultural values.” If you need to use 2 languages in your daily life, you’ll understand how deep this is. So I’ll keep on reading no matter what just because of this sentence. ☺️ Such a thing ever happened to you? Do you remember the sentence? . 🇹🇷 "Annemin ölümünden iki yıl sonra babam göz alıcı, sarışın, Ukraynalı bir dula tutuldu. Babam seksen dört, kadın otuz altı yaşındaydı.”🎈Böyle başlıyor #ukraynatraktörlerininkısatarihi. İngiltere’de yaşayan Ukraynalı bir ailenin hikayesini anlatıyor. Ben de aynısını yaptığımdan başka bir ülkede yaşama üzerine yazılan her şeyi zevkle okuyorum. Yorumlara göre aşırı komik ve çok eğlenceli bir kitap bu ancak ben hiç komik bulmadım. Karakterleri iki boyutlu bulmakla birlikte kitabın vasat bir plaj kitabı olduğunu düşündüm. Tam vazgeçecekken bir cümleye rastladım: “Dilde sadece düşünceler değil kültürel değerler de vardır...” İki dilli bir yaşam sürüyorsanız bu cümle size de çok anlamlı gelecek. Finished this book for my #bookclub . I've not read any #marinalewycka books before. I know #ashorthistoryoftractorsinukrainian was a huge success. So gave her new one a go. Mixed reviews on this one. I couldn't really connect with the two main characters. And not must information about characters I wanted to learn about. I also felt she hasn't done much research on things like council flats and what people are entitled too when this was a huge part of the story. Was a shame and made me question the rest of the book. Wouldn't reccomended as a must read and don't know if I would read again but I did enjoy it. #bookclub #parkhillbookclub (at Park Hill, Sheffield)
