Okay that’s a good call back xDDD
I had so much fun with that movie!
Let’s start at a surface level: It does help to be a Mario fan already going into this as it’s LOADED with references! Like they are fucking everywhere! I can tell that the people behind this movie had a love for the franchise and Nintendo as a whole! Some may call it pandering, I call it “showing your fan club card.”
This movie did so much right. Recreating the art style of the games, incorporating game logic into the story and then making it work into a consistent world! It’s impressive they’d go this far to create a consistent world with such goofy concepts! Compare that to the first Sonic Movie that gave Sonic blue lightning and made rings portal devices. People notice stuff like that. The loyalty to the brand on display here is ASTOUNDING!
And even if they did only that much, fans would be happy, but they went the extra mile and gave us actual characters! They painstakingly built up the personalities and relationships of the main cast over the course of the film, and they did it in a way that felt natural!
Mario and Luigi’s brotherly love was a clear stand out of the film, which is amazing considering how little time we spend with the two of them together. They are separated for most of the movie after all. However they did such a good job with what little they had that I actually cared about the two of them, and it made the ending all the more sweeter!
Peach really came into her own as a character in this movie. She was so badass in this film and I loved it so much! But her little romance with Mario was so sweet and subtle! It’s a good balance of relying on him, but not depending entirely on him. I love that the writers remembered that Peach was just as capable as Mario in the games and made that consistent throughout.
Jack Black KILLED IT as Bowser. My GOG was he perfect for that role! His anti somehow juggled between silly and intimidating at the same time!
Oh, speaking of the voice work, Mario’s voice really grew on me. As mentioned before, they did a good job easing you into it as the start of the movie and by the end, I’m satisfied with it.
And with the unprecedented success of this movie, we are most likely going to get sequels, and I for one welcome them! Give me more of this cast! I’ll be eagerly waiting to liveblog it! Hell, give me a Donkey Kong movie, or a Luigi’s Mansion! How about a Mario Kart movie? This is one universe that’s PERFECT for cinematic universe fodder!
I’m very happy with this movie, and I’ll be showing this to my mom the first chance I get! ^^
Next time, we return to Young Justice!
Thank you for joining me! I love you!

PEACH: So how do we get home?
MARIO: Uhhhhhh.....
Okay, we’re opening with sequel bait xD
Oh right! That’s the egg that was given as a gift at Bowser’s wedding! It makes sense it would wind up here!
The second movie HAD to have Yoshi in it. You couldn’t wait to bring him into the fold for more than one film xD
An after credits scene? Okay, what do they have for me here...
Also, wasn’t all this destroyed by bowser’s flying keep?
