A little while ago, I put together a list of the most popular Christian marriage advice books. I made this list based on a variety of factors; I looked at a bunch of “best of” lists and found the ones that showed up on more than one, or had the most reviews– and the most positive reviews– on Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Christianbook . . . I also tried to limit the list to books that were extremely popular and well-known, that appeared frequently in church curriculum or pre-marital counseling materials. After I had the list, I put up a poll on the next book I should review as part of an extended review series. Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge was the winner, but the close second was Real Marriage by Mark and Grace Driscoll. Since Real Marriage was only published in 2012, it’s not a book that’s been able to have a “lasting impact” of any kind, but it is a book that’s been in the public consciousness since it came out, most recently because of how it became a “New York Times Bestseller.” It’s also been a polarizing book and has caused a lot of controversy. …

For many people, belief in hell as a place of eternal torment for the wicked is an indisputable tenet of Christian orthodoxy. In their view, rejecting or modifying this belief is tantamount to rejecting Christianity, itself. But a growing number of believers disagree. They argue that we can have a loving God or we can have eternal hell, but we can’t have both.

Hellbound? is a provocative, critically acclaimed documentary that wades right into the center of this debate. Featuring interviews with controversial Mars Hill Church pastor Mark Driscoll; screenwriting guru (and atheist) Robert McKee; self-proclaimed exorcist Bob Larson; the purveyors of a “hell house” in Dallas, TX; “Oderous Urungus,” lead singer of the rock band GWAR; and the notorious Westboro Baptists, Hellbound? presents a challenging, eclectic and entertaining mixture of views from across the theological spectrum.

Does hell exist? If so, who goes there, and why? Hellbound? is a probing, incendiary journey that ensures viewers will never look at hell the same way again.

This looks really interesting. Hell's always been one of my points of interests with respect to Christianity. They interview some pretty big names in the evangelical community, too: Mark Driscol, Ray Comfort, and William Paul Young (who wrote The Shack). They also interview two academics whom I haven't heard of, but probably should know: Ron Dart and Jaime Clark-Soles

I just finished reading a great sermon by Mark Driscol about Jesus and Peter that reminded me of the stark reality of Satan. Here's what he had to say:

  Satan is also real, therefore, in your life and mine, and he works categorically in three ways: the world, the flesh, and the devil. This is what the Bible teaches.

The world is the external system that is opposed to God, that tempts you to rebel against God, and sin against God, and live a life of folly, and the world is filled with innumerable opportunities to fail God and to sin against him. Internally, we have the flesh. This is a predisposition toward rebellion, toward sin, toward folly, toward death, toward failure.

Working in concert with the world externally and the flesh internally is the devil. He’s our enemy and our adversary, and he’s going to come at you, friends, with temptations. He’s going to come at you with accusations, with second-person conversations: “You are a failure. You are unloved. You will never change. You should just kill yourself.”

He will come at you, as well, with lies. He is the father of lies. And if you believe his lies, he will destroy you. That’s why Jesus says you need to know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Furthermore, he will come at you with condemnations. “This is what you’ve done. This is who you are.” Even taking sins of your past that you’ve apologized for and moved on from, throwing them into your face, so that you feel condemned, and ashamed, and dirty, and destroyed, and devastated, and hopeless, and bewildered.

It's so easy for me to go through  my days without thinking of the reality that Satan hates God and wants to harm me. He attacks from outside and inside to make me weak, and when I'm most vulnerable he hits me in the face with his lies and accusations. What a jerk! To hell with the devil!

With the reminder of this reality, we have to have to remind ourselves of the truth of the gospel.  Satan has already lost and he has no real power over us.

"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. - 1 Cor 15:55-57

In Christ we have already won! My prayer is that we remember that and live like champs!
