Saw reblogged that Mr. Tamil was supposed to be Korean in the books, a lone wolf assassin, how far into the books does he show up even? Like I said in a previous post, the movie seems more like an inspired than adapted thing. I could be wrong, what would I know about film making, just my uninformed opinion.

But yea, I did enjoy the movie very much, a fun watch, not much plot going on, this seems to be more of an appetizer to the plot of the story that is supposed to occur later down the line yet. I mean, the USB got destroyed, evil duke basson revealed that there are longer strings behind him, there are fouler things at play, there may be other sierras, they may or may not yet be expanded on, sierra four may have known some people. The thing is, we are just about to witness the rock Sisyphus is pushing near the top of the hill roll to the bottom again. That's what this movie felt like, exciting but the battle is just about to start. I wouldn't mind watching it again, it's Ryan Gosling competently beating *rses and showing off his arms most of the time. I also wanna crack the character's head open and check at what exactly makes six tick. He's stoic and seemingly unfeeling, but has enough of a conscience to mind collateral, he does fine enough committing crimes I guess, he's likely compartmentalizing, he's trained enough he doesn't express much through his body language. He didn't show distress when the camera guy tricked him, tamil guy took the necklace, not Hansen threatening him. He still does express something though, his frustration at margaret at her insistence on staying, a tired slump when telling Miranda about murdering his father, his hesitation at leaving Fitzroy final suicide stand, he's definitely a paranoid one, enough not to express anything. Trained to be an asset he may be, he cares enough to be human is what my most definitely biased opinion would be. I should get into the books sometime

Edit: to jiby - don't worry you didn't come off as aggressive or anything, that was just me muttering to myself. I'm actually very happy to know things, I don't mind being told about it, I'm grateful, it's really nice to interact/discuss something on a shared interest. I'd still watch a sequel, I'll watch it for the plot (hehe). Thank you, truly.

watching ryan gosling movies recently (i didn't even know he existed before phm) and watched the grey man. wasn't amazing, but i somewhat enjoyed it. anyway, i read the first book. (spoilers)

This book was dumb as hell.

FIRST of all, why did we feel the need to refer to Court as “Court” one sentence, “Gentry” the next, then “the Grey Man”, then “the American”. I’m SICK of it. You can say a lot by how a character refers to themselves and other characters. Calling him 10 different names in one POV makes it confusing and also just takes meaning from the name.

(In edition to this, why were we calling people by epithets when we know them. “The Korean”, “the American”—SHUT UP. I hate epithets I’m sorry. Sure, do that when the character hasn’t properly been introduced yet. But not when we already know them 😭. ALSO₂, how did we know the nationality of every single person ever? And was it necessary? Half the book was just “the Nigerian”, “the Asian”, “the Englishman”, “the Bulgarian”. I’m so sick of it. It just took away from the story for some reason. I’d be halfway through a fight scene and then “the Botswanan” and I start thinking about geography.)

Court is a terrible assassin, a thread:

Why does it take him until halfway through the book to figure out that he’s been double-crossed by Fitz??? Fitz tells him that his family has been kidnapped AND that the Network has been compromised. And Court doesn’t think even once that it means Fitz may have been compromised too??? He’s an idiot.

And he told that random French nurse his whole life story? Why would he do that?

He also doesn’t seem to know any languages other than English. Not even German, which I feel like would be a main one, you know? He’s been an assassin for sixteen years. I know that most of his assassin stuff is just the killing part, but what about when he’s trying to blend in? For the people trying to hunt him (of which there must be many) it would probably be harder to find him when he’s just chilling if he’s pretending to be a nationality other than American. RIGHT?

At the start of the book, he unloads several rounds into a crowd of Iraqis dancing around a dead American because he “just couldn’t help himself”, “cuss[ing himself] aloud at his lack of discipline”. SIXTEEN YEARS, need I remind you.

I’m sure there are more, but I can’t remember.

He has this interaction with the French girl:

“Are you a bad man, Jim?” “I don’t think so. I’ve been taught some bad things. I do some ... some bad things. But only to bad people.”

And he seems to believe it? It really looks like he’s saying it because he genuinely believes it, not just to comfort this poor girl he’s traumatised. Which is wild, man.

My guy Court had at least three holes in him and was still managing to be stealthy and kill five more people. It gets to a point. He gets basically gutted and then jumps into the Seine. Which is very cold. And dirty as hell. Yeah sure, bro, just wash out your gaping stomach wound.

This was written and therefore most likely set in 2009. So what’s with all the slurs? It feels like I’m in the ’70s. I really don’t think it adds anything to the story. And what was the point of Maurice (Court’s mentor) saying that diabolical thing about the apartheid.

“South Africans,” [Maurice] said, obviously having heard their accents. The leader asked, “Where is the Grey Man?” “Look at you guys.” Maurice ignored the leader’s qestion. “Three black, three white. Ebony and ivory. Back in the old days you whiteys would be beating down on you darkeys, wouldn’t you?” There was no response. “You white boys must miss those apartheid days, huh?”

Personally, I don’t think that adds anything to the character. He’s supposed to be someone Court looks up to. He also dies on like the next page. It was unnecessary.

Prologues. If you’re going to write a prologue, it need to either be in a different time, place, or POV from the rest of the book. Like, there has to be a reason that it’s not just chapter one. Chapter one in this book picks up right after the prologue in the same place with the same person. There was no reason to make it a prologue, it should have just been tacked onto the start of the chapter.

I knew that this was going to end badly when this was the last line of the prologue:

“Keep moving, Gentry, just keep moving. Those dudes are fucked. Nothing you can do about it.” Gentry’s spoken words were sensible. but his inner monologue just would not shut up.

Holy yap. The movie was better.

I swear. I read each volume trying to latch on to a bit of comfort for Court 🤷

Justine, who treats Six as one of her canine patients and cooing over a crying man?

She feeds him. She serves a croissant and coffee. She lets him take a nap 🥺

Don, the cunning old man who used Claire to motivate Gray Man on the verge of death to go to the rescue of his family. And Court has a soft spot for this girl, so on the verge of a breakdown, he promises to save her.

And Claire worries so much about Jim, doesn't want to leave him, and helps him when he barely walks about his own🥺

Sierra One calls Court "young" even though he is an adult? And he insists on killing him, but he doesn't.

Ellena... She's just convinced that she can fix Gray Man. They have this great chemistry and just want to give Gentry some warmth. (WHERE IS MY SCENE IN THE HOTEL, WHERE AFTER A LOVELY NIGHT COURT CUDDLES UP TO A PRETTY WOMAN???) Ellen has so much faith and trust in Court 🥺

And Eddie. Oh Eddie... What kind of guy he was. You've known each other for so short a time, and Court was willing to die for you! This guy has shown more goodwill throughout Gentry's career than anyone else. Eddie he was imprisoned and was to be rescued by a man with malaria. Irony. Indeed, Gentry was quite unlucky *laughter*.

Eddie He was so affected by leaving a sick Court in the jungle that I thought my heart was going to break. Two weeks?

They made the two men die for each other.

Those gentle touches, checking temperatures, giving their own rations, beating down fevers , rubbing limbs when Court was trembling and Eddi's steadfastness that they would escape from prison together, even if he had to lumber Gentry on his back made me want to cry.

And in the end, he had to abandon a barely conscious Gray Man, who tried to convince a concerned Eddie that once he was safe, the CIA would rescue the ailing Court.

And then that scene when Gray Man, who was left in the mud - ready to die, though terrified by the vision of drowning in a puddle because he couldn't move - finally saw Eddie and almost started to cry. Until then, I have not seen Court laugh as many times as he did then in prison with Eddie. And that code name "Sally" given by Eddie *Laughter*.

When , so Court finally saw the little sister Eddie had talked so much about…. She was beautiful , so similar to Eddie, and yet different, not of this world. Mark Greaney, the Gamboa siblings, Eddie and Laura would take excellent care of Court. Maybe I am biased because I love threesomes , but that chemistry between Eddie and Court and his sister is beautiful and tragic.
