Samantha Reads Comics: Defend 'Er? I 'Ardly Know 'Er! #5
Ah, the Fifty State Initiative! Let's see where Giffen takes the Defenders concept now, working with a different co-writer and a different lineup of characters.

HOLY SHIT IT'S RECORDER FUCK YES
I love that they seemingly break the "non-team" history of the Defenders by having them be an Initiative gig, only to have the actual team disbanded in the second issue.
hey look, it's the Defenders For A Day!

Daimon I really hope you're being sarcastic; whining is kinda Kyle's whole deal
Yeah, really surprised by how great this series turned out to be. Favorite so far in this binge. Need to check out Vengeance someday since apparently the Last Defenders come back for that.

#5 Blazing Skull
December 15
Foreign correspondent Mark Todd, assigned by his newspaper to cover the Second Sino-Japanese War, is forced to take refuge in a cave during an artillery bombardment by the Japanese. There he meets the Skull Men, a strange race with burning skulls for heads. They inform him he has been chosen by the forces of destiny to be the champion of freedom, and they begin his training, which grants him abilities such as invulnerability to fire. Once his training is completed, he returns home and, motivated by the horrors of Nazism, dons a uniform with a flaming mask (in honor of the Skull Men), taking the name "The Blazing Skull". As time passes and he continues to master the Skull Men's teachings, he gains the ability to turn his flesh invisible, mimicking his teachers' appearance, and stops using the mask. He first appeared in Mystic Comics #5 (December 15, 1940).
