“That’s his hurt spot.” Sam spoke quiet. He knew the funny look people gave to his brother. The tilt in the neck, the questioning eyes that tried to make out the worsening scar along Jack’s forehead. Sam wasn’t supposed to talk about it. Billy said so. Because it had come from the same source as too many of their troubles. From the monster. The monster that was a secret. The monster that had left it’s ghost in the attic.

Town was different from their little home in the middle of the countryside. Busy. Full of life. Overwhelming. Allie had somehow managed to convince Jack that it was a good idea. That Sammy should come along. It wouldn’t be too bad. What could happen? It was just a trip to town. And it would be good for him, to see more of the world outside their little estate, and not just what he just knew from children’s books and memories of across the ocean.
It was quite the field trip. Jane had told him to find something exciting to share with her when he got back. A tight hand gripped in Allie’s, nervous feet stepping quick to try and keep up. Sam had looked away for a second. Dropped her hand for a second - just to pick up an intricately shaped rock off the ground. Maybe that would be something to show Jane. Only, when he’d stood up again, Sam was alone.
Wellies shifted on the pavement. Wide eyes immediately began searching around. But it didn’t help that town was populated, with cars and passers by to overwhelm and distract. To hide between, exactly when you weren’t supposed to be hiding. Allie could be anywhere. Jack could be- Sam started to panic, lips furrowed, down turned. Two many people that weren’t them. Eyes looked to each new movement of town life, trying to track it all, only to add to his anxieties. Of being alone, in an unfamiliar place. Lost. “Allie- Jack?” Quiet. Soft. Trembled. Sam rubbed a hand over the eye, trying to sweep away waiting tears, before lowering it again. Hands lingered at his front, playing with the worn patch on his overalls.
